PUSHING DAISIES Comic-Con Panel

It’s quite obvious that my favorite show for the upcoming fall season is ABC’s new quirky yet emotional dramedy PUSHING DAISIES. Saturday, Comic-Con hosted a special early morning screening and panel discussion with the cast, Lee Pace, Anna Friel, Chi McBride, Kristin Chenoweth, as well as the creator Bryan Fuller and Director Barry Sonnenfeld.
Kath from GMMR and I thought we were being real slick and arriving for the panel at 7am (started at 9:15) only to realize many people had the same idea and we were like 75th in line for all of Hall 6. Luckily most people were there for Avatar and there was a rabid pack of female fans there already for the 2:30pm Supernatural panel. Regardless, we got 2nd row center which happened to be about 15 feet from Lee Pace himself!
Saturday’s screening was my 4th time watching the pilot and I was psyched to realize that there are still so much more awesomeness to the show than I had originally noticed. With each viewing, the show gets more enticing, layered, emotional, sentimental, witty, and down right charming. And to be truthful, with each viewing I fall more in love with Ned The Pie Maker.
I was nervous to see how an audience at Comic-Con would take to the show and I’m more than happy to report that they flipped their nerd lids over it! Hell even the kid working the room and helping set up the panels stopped everything and parked himself on the stage staring at the monitor in the front row. He was enamored and so was the crowd.
They laughed in all the right places, they let out sighs of dreaminess at all the right places, they went “awwwww” at all the right places, and most of all basked in the cinematic glory that is Pushing Daisies and they cheered like mad when the credits began rolling. That’s an amazing reception if you’re asking!
First out was Barry Sonnenfeld, then the stacked midget Kristin Chenoweth, Chi McBride, the lovely and dreamy Anna Friel, followed by… sweet Jesus it’s LEE PACE! Then finally creator Bryan Fuller.
My favorite part about the panel was when moderator Brian Lowry from Variety, asked if Lee and Anna were “method” while filming, meaning that they don’t touch each other - ever. The answer was non-verbal as Anna reached over, grabbed Lee’s face and started making out with him! It was hysterical and amazing to see these two touch! Head on over to ThePieMaker.com to see the video of Ned and Chuck’s first kiss as adults!
Kristin Chenoweth was a huge hit with the fans. A lot of the questions asked during the panel were directed toward her and while it made me sad to think noone was asking Lee or Anna anything, Chenoweth is a damn good panelist. She’s funny, sassy, smart, and a big ham so she really engaged the audience and those asking questions. Hell at one point, a guy came up to the mic, said he loved her and in return she pulled apart the top of her blouse and heaved her massive cleavage his direction. It was hysterical!
He then asked how long she would be on the show (she confirmed that she’s a series regular and there for the long haul) and as she defered it to Exec. Producer Barry Sonnenfeld, she turned to him and flashed him the cleavage as well. She then joked that she just bought herself a couple seasons worth of screentime. Genius!
The panel only lasted a good 20 minutes and then they were off to the press room for interviews before heading down to the Warner Bros. booth for signing. Kath, Rae, Thomas, and I went down to the booth and while they wouldn’t let us in line (claiming it was full), we met up with our WB contact and got ourselves spots about 3 feet from the cast and crew for the next hour.
I gave creator Bryan Fuller as well as Lee Pace and Anna Friel my Ducky Does TV business cards and also told them about a great new site I found online called ThePieMaker.com and they wrote it down. A couple times, from across the people signing I talked to Bryan Fuller. Anna Friel is adorable and posed for pics. I shook hands with Lee Pace, we had some funny comments back and forth then I drooled for a while.
This was way better than getting in line and only seeing them for 30 seconds as they signed a poster. This was standing there, having face time, making faces, laughing at them, laughing with them, and just being able to watch them in action. The funniest part was Kathie catching Lee doing a very serious smoldering face in a picture and calling him out on it. He was pretty embarassed and it was pretty funny!
We were stalkers? Maybe. But we had our Warner Bros. rep there with us so we looked like legit stalkers instead of crazy fan stalkers. There’s a distinction.
