Kyle XY’s MATT DALLAS Interview Part 2
Posted by: Ducky in Matt Dallas, Kyle XY, ABC, Interview, Ducky Does TVNow that KYLE XY’s Season 2 is halfway done and the finale has aired, I’ve finally had the chance to post the rest of the MATT DALLAS Interview. If you missed Part 1 of the Matt Dallas Interview don’t forget to read up on that before sinking your teeth into the final segment.
Let Part 2 begin…
Question: What are your favorite character relationships on the show?
Matt Dallas: It’s hard because I love working with everyone on the show. Everytime I get to work with a member of the family or with Tom Foss it’s so great. I’d have to say that one of my favorite relationships to play with is the relationship with Nicole because they have such a different relationship than anyone else shares in the family. She tries to play this really maternal role to him and he wants to be normal and to be a kid but at the same time they know it just can’t be that way. She tries to be his guardian and to teach him things but at the same time, he’s teaching her so they’re on the same level and its such a fun relationship to explore.
At the same time I love to work with Tom Foss because they have such a cool relationship - he’s really mentoring Kyle and they have this strong, deep relationship that Tom Foss will never let Kyle see.
My favorite relationship to watch on the show, and it has nothing to do with me, is Josh and Andy. The two of them are so great together and I love watching their relationship on the show.
Question: What is your favorite Sour Patch Kid flavor?
Matt Dallas: Green, and I don’t even know what flavor that is. I just like the green ones.
Question: You talked about how ABC Family was trying to change their image and mature as a network (see Greek) - has there been a change in the way the show is written and how does the cast feel about that?
Matt Dallas: I don’t think they’re trying to become more adult, I just feel that they’re trying to mature the show. The network in general has been trying to break away from what your typical definition of family is. When you say “family” you think Boy Meets World and Saturday Morning Cartoons so its more of them trying to break away from that.
For us, it’s been exciting for us to be there to help pioneer that. The network has been exploring themes and how to progress as a show so it’s been cool to be a part of that.
Question: The marketing for the show has been a little risque with your midriff plastered everywhere. Did they go into that with you before the show started? What do you think about it and how they’ve basically sexualized you?
Matt Dallas: I had no idea it was going to be like that! When I went in to shoot the posters for that, the original idea never intended for it to be as risque as it was but in the end the poster was so cool and it caught your attention. It’s funny because even the people that didn’t know the show - you’d say “Kyle XY” and they’d be like… “Oh the belly button thing - I saw you all over LA or holding your shirt up” So it did what they wanted it to do, they got people talking. So I thought it was a great poster.
Question: Assuming there is a third season — and odds are good that there will be — what challenges would you like to see Kyle face in the future?
Matt Dallas: Now that he knows who he is and his purpose, I’d like to see Kyle touch the world. Start doing things that are meaningful. Have Kyle really help people and change them, use his abilities for something bigger than simply saving a cat from a tree.
Question: Back to ABC Family reworking, have you been surprised by any of the subject matter the network has allowed on the show?
Matt Dallas: Definitely, consistently. Everyone is really happy that the network is allowing us to explore and touch on current events without being censored all the time. The episode FREE TO BE YOU AND ME dealt with the gay community and why [some people think] same sex couples are not okay while straight couples are. There was some controversy and it had people talking and it was great to see the network stand behind the writers and let them talk about this. This is out there and this is what’s going on in the world so it’s definitely been surprising but great!
Question: As the show moves on and Kyle discovers more about the world is there a danger of losing the naivety or innocence to Kyle?
Matt Dallas: Kyle will always have a sense of naivety because he is technically so young, he is only a year old. On the other hand he will continue to grow and he will no longer be that wide eyed boy that he once was but I’m not afraid to lose it because there is so much more to his character.
He has room to grow and it looks like he’ll become more of this mythic figure like Gandhi or Mother Teresa so to get to see that in the making is so fascinating.
MILD SPOILERS FOR THE SECOND HALF OF SEASON 2 AHEAD…
Question: How far into shooting Season 2 and what can you tell us about what takes place in that second half?
Matt Dallas: Right now we are shooting episode 17 (they are currently about to begin 19) and this year I can tell you that according to our Producer Julie Plec it’s all about Kyle finding the extraordinary in the ordinary. We’re still trying to put together the puzzle pieces of what that really means.
For the back half of the season, the family will be brought back into the A story and into what’s going on with Kyle’s life and the mystery and integrating them back into the story. The family has such a great relationship and the family is what attracted viewers to the show in the first place so I think it will be great.
Question: Will the Tragers discover more about Kyle?
Matt Dallas: I’m really not allowed to say. The family’s role in the mystery will be revealed shortly.
Question: Is it safe to say that Kyle and Jessi are the only two clones out there?
Matt Dallas: As far as I know, they are the only two. But I’m continually as shocked and surprised as you guys are.
Question: Any teasers for the first half finale?
Matt Dallas: Matt and Jessi go on a hunt to put the pieces together. They start finding all these clues leading them on a road trip that takes them to find out who Jessi is, who Kyle is, where they come from, why they’re here, and there are some surprises about people returning.
I hope you all enjoyed the interview. Quick before leaving though, I did ask him what TV Shows he currently likes and I’m happy to report the boys got good taste. He’s obsessed with Lost, Heroes, Strangers with Candy, and Flight of the Conchords.
The first half of Season 2 concluded tonight, did you love it? I haven’t seen it yet but hope to very shortly. If you’re dying for the second half, sadly we have to wait until Spring/Early Summer 2008.
