Interview with SUPERNATURAL’s Bela - LAUREN COHAN
Posted by: Ducky in Ducky Does TV, Interview, Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Katie Cassidy, Lauren Cohan, SupernaturalThe CW’s SUPERNATURAL is now in it’s third season and so far the show has been wildly successful being carried by it’s two male leads, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki. This season however, it was announced that two female characters would be joining the cast. The internet exploded with speculation about these ladies being brought in as love interests and people jumped to wild conclusions about the characters of Ruby (Katie Cassidy) and Bela (Lauren Cohan) months before their debut.
In the season premiere entitled “The Magnificent Seven” we were introduced to Ruby, the stalkerish knife wielding demon ass kicker and on October 18th we’ll be introduced to Bela, the mercenary supernatural arms dealer. I got to sit down and chat with newbie LAUREN COHAN who plays Bela to find out how she came to the show, more about her character, and what she thinks about being one of the most talked about new castings of the fall season.
DDTV: How is it going so far?
Lauren Cohan: It’s been going really well actually, and I hate that I’m sick right now because I’d like to be a bit more bubbly but… things are going really well. I just got back last week from filming an episode with Sterling Brown (who plays returning hunter/foe of the Winchesters, Gordon) and that was, OH so much fun because he’s a real baddie! We have this kind of a face off, he’s an evil character which is good because I tend to feel a bit bad being mean to the boys because my character is a real piece of work (laughs).
It’s been really really fun and it’s been quite a funny experience because its a big family atmosphere as I’m sure you gathered having visited the set before.
DDTV: Were they pretty open and accepting to you as a new character?
LC: Yes definitely, as soon as I got there I kind of felt like the little sister because they’re like the big brothers that poke fun and make you feel silly but welcome… We have lots of laughs and it’s a lot of fun.
The episode before last was a really big episode for my character and there was this one scene in a safe house and it was old and dilapidated and there were rat traps everywhere and Jared kept trying to get everyone to hold the rat traps. He just kept passing them around, throwing them to different people saying “Here, catch this” — I guess that’s par for the course. It’s a lot of work but it’s a lot of fun.
DDTV: Bela shows up in Episode 3 “Bad Day at Black Rock” right?
LC: Yes, I’ll be on the 18th I believe.
What can you tell us about your arrival?
LC: It’s kind of mysterious and they don’t really know what to make of her. She basically has a face off with Dean and gives him a taste of everything that is to come between them, she’s basically just out to weasel things out of them and then try to make it up to them in a way.
Read the rest of the interview after the jump…
DDTV: I’ve read that Bela is a bit like a mercenary and that she’s out for the money and her own good so I can only imagine that will cause some issues with the boys.
LC: Yes. To date she’s really only there exploiting the boys goodness so everything that they do, like all the ceremonies they perform and all of the paraphernalia they have to acquire to save people, she basically steals it and sells it for money to the Middle East and Russia, everywhere, and doesn’t have much of a conscience about it. She thinks she’s justified, thinks that the boys are really naive and kind of endearing but at the same time sees everything as an opportunity.
DDTV: Now are you going to have any interaction with Katie’s character Ruby?
LC: We will soon, I think there’s some action between Katie and I in about 3 or 4 episodes…
DDTV: Excellent, people love some girl on girl fighting if possible…
LC: (Laughs) Well, I know our encounter is not nice… I wondered if it was going to be us teaming up but I don’t think so. I don’t think that’s what we’re going to see.
DDTV: So are they pitting you against the boys and the only other girl on the show?
LC: Maybe… We’ll see… I actually don’t really know to be completely honest with you but I think it might be that…
DDTV: Okay…
LC: Yeah…
DDTV: Could you tell us what background you were given on Bela before coming onto the show?
LC: At my audition the background they gave me was that she’s a mercenary, very much out for herself, but as we’ve gotten further into the show we’ve talked about more and I’ve realized that she’s a really damaged character. She’s had some incredibly terrible things happen to her which explains why she lives her life like this and what in her mind justifies her behavior and she’s definitely a lot more evil, not evil, but a lot less heartful than I had expected. It was quite a surprise as I got to my second episode and it’s all harsh. It really isn’t that nice (laughs)…
For preparation I knew that she was a thief and that she was cunning and a bit of a spy but I didn’t realize that she was quite as hard as she is. She keeps those walls up and very rarely lets them down. She does but then she quickly builds them back up because she doesn’t like to ask anyone for help, there are some instances where she does have to ask for help from the boys and she doesn’t like it at all.
DDTV: So are we going to get some of her background in flashbacks or something to explain why she’s the way she is?
LC: I don’t think there will be anything before Bela actually shows up but I believe there are some flashbacks planned. I think…
DDTV: It sounds like there’s a really dark past for Bela and I think it would be really interesting to see that.
LC: I feel like here can’t not be to be honest. There needs to be some explaining, especially if someone’s going to come in and be mean to these beloved boys.
DDTV: Can I move into the difficult question?
LC: Yes (laughs)
DDTV: There was a good amount of controversy swirling around when they announced the addition of the female characters…
LC: Yes, I know about the attention and reaction of the fans, let’s put it that way…
DDTV: Yeah, they love their Winchester boys and are protective of them and are worried that throwing two girls in with them will change the dynamic and create possible love interests. I know that Eric Kripke has said repeatedly that you’re not being brought on as a love interest so how do you react to the attention drawn to your character, the pre-judgments put on you before you’ve even been on air?
LC: To be honest, first off as Eric has already said, we are definitely not being introduced as love interests… I think it’s exciting to introduce these two girls onto a show where the fans are so protective of the boys and it’s exciting ya know… we’re not here to spice things up because the show’s already spicy enough but it’s interesting to see what happens when you throw the female dynamic in there.
As far as the fans being wary of us coming on, I think it’s exciting! The fans are dedicated and it’s a challenge for us to live up. It’s wonderful to be part of a show where the audience cares that much about the characters.
DDTV: I thought the whole uprising was ridiculous and in my opinion the introduction of Ruby in the season premiere proved that you can bring on kick ass female characters that add to the dynamic instead of taking away from it.
LC: That’s very true, I like to think that the female fans are interested in seeing how the boys will face off against the females, it’s just another interesting thing to throw into the Supernatural mix.
DDTV: Is it exciting for you to be playing such a strong character?
LC: Definitely, she’s wielded a few guns already! Not that the guns make her a strong character but things she gets to say and the way she gets to have at it is nice. A lot of roles I’ve played up until now is the good girl next door who gets the boy so this is definitely a challenge and a exciting opportunity.
DDTV: Did you get to do any fight training for the part?
LC: No, not so much of the fight training… Katie’s character Ruby is more of the fighter, kickboxing kung fu role. I’ve had a bit of gun training which has decreased as I’ve used the weapons. She’s much more — she hasn’t had to get physical yet but we’ll see what happens when she and Ruby meet each other (laughs). She hasn’t had to resort to that yet, so far she’s much more sly like a fox.
DDTV: Had you seen the show before?
LC: Yes, well I’d seen one episode before. I just moved over from England so when I began auditioning I was like: ‘Oh my god there is so much TV I haven’t seen’ but I’ve now seen all of them.
DDTV: Was it odd coming into a show that is a little more supernatural based and not as reality based in content?
LC: Yes I was aware of a lot of night shoots but luckily my character does a lot during the day so my dealings haven’t really been with the supernatural creatures but the tools used and with things outside of the actual demons themselves. It’s much more in the real world than the supernatural world though they do cross over a bit so that may change.
DDTV: So you’re living in Los Angeles not Vancouver?
LC: Yes, I just moved into a new place in L.A. so I’m really dragging my feet about. I’m living with two Englishmen so that’s homey. It’s nice to find a piece of L.A. because I’ve done the trip the year before and a year before that and it’s easy to feel like a bit of nothing, displaced in L.A. so this is nice.
DDTV: Can you give me some information on your acting background?
LC: I did plays all through school then when I went to University I did English literature and Drama studies. That consisted of writing, directing, and acting on the Drama side of things and then, well I think we all know what happens on the English side of things.
When I was at University I formed a theatre company and we did some touring and festivals. We moved to London to try and get one of our plays shown and at that time I went to meet with an agent, so did one of the other guys in the group and we both were successful in getting films in a few weeks so we were like ‘We’ll do it in the spring, or in the summer’ but then things just kind of got off the ground with films and TV stuff.
I really miss doing stage though, I really do. I actually prefer that, hands down to anything else and I can do it in bits and pieces but it’s not that easy to commit to a play. Life’s much easier if you can get work in TV or film so I don’t know. I’ll have a summer hiatus so maybe that’s when I can do it. That’s my background pretty much!
DDTV: Does that mean that one day you’ll be a triple threat with writing, acting, and directing?
LC: Yeah, I hope so. Right now I’m working on a screenplay with someone I live with and she also has two jobs while we do this so we sit down and write when we can and I think that’s the ideal really, to be involved in your own projects as much as possible.
DDTV: Moving back toward a more show theme related question… There’s so much classic rock on the show…
LC: I know, isn’t the soundtrack so good? I love the music in every episode.
DDTV: Well, fans have really tried to get a soundtrack but I know that Warner Bros. really balked at the idea but along those lines, I know there are some readers who want to know what your favorite Classic Rock song is and if Bela has a Classic Rock theme song yet?
LC: (laughs) Wow, a theme for Bela… I feel like Bela would be more into Classical music than Classic Rock to be honest with you. But I don’t know, I can see her performing some murderous acts, well not murderous because she’s not a killer but I almost imagine that there’s something placid about Bela on the surface but that there’s something dark and evil underneath. I think it’s funny to think of Bela doing something wild to Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons” but…
As for me, I don’t know. I love Zeppelin and Hendricks, I really do love rock. My parents just sent me their entire record collection from the 60’s so that will be a fine project to dive into.
DDTV: Another quick question because I know you need to go… Who is your favorite character on the show to watch and who is your favorite character to play with?
LC: Um… I have to say that Sterling/Gordon is my favorite character to work with because he was just great! He’s kind of neurotic and I get kind of neurotic so — he plays such an intense character so it requires a lot of that. Before we jump into a scene, facing off, he’d be behind the camera jumping around and making all these noises so when he comes out I’m really energized for the camera. He’s great…
And my favorite to watch? Oh, I really loved the one where Dean had a doppelganger (Season 1’s ‘Skin‘) and Dean had to kill the other Dean… do you know that one?
DDTV: Oh yes…
LC: Okay (laughs)
DDTV: Do you know if your character plays a bigger role mythology wise? Does her background have anything to do with the backstory of the Winchesters at all?
LC: If my character does? Wow, that’s interesting… I hope so because I really like that idea!
DDTV: Um, me too! Well thank you so much for taking the time to chat with me and good luck with everything.
LC: Oh thank you Dan, take care.
Lauren was a great interview! She had a pretty good cold coming on so she was soft spoken but relaxed, laid back, and entertaining. I hope that I asked all the burning questions you had for Lauren and her character Bela. I love that she wasn’t afraid to talk about the so called controversy surrounding her arrival and I feel that all of her answers were from the heart. I also dig that she’s not just an actress, she’s a well educated and ambitious lady who aspires to conquer all aspects of the entertainment business.
I thought I’d quickly share a question I left out of the main interview above. It’s a bit telling of just how serious the show is to giving these girls their Supernatural due. Was she saying more than she should or was it just a comment…
DDTV: Do you know how many episodes you’ll be featured in?
LC: This year, so far I’m in about 50% of the episodes… more than that, I don’t know how many next year.
Discuss…

Great interview! I have a much better sense of Bela now. After the premiere I was so excited about Ruby’s addition to the actual hunting world. But Bela seems like she’ll expand on the supernatural world in a more interesting way, like Missouri maybe. More the brains than the brawn.
She seems like she could definitely rival Dean in a childhood angst-off! I hope the writers will eventually talk about her background and I hope they use her dealings with hunters in other countries to reveal some things about the international supernatural community.

It sounds like she will be a great foil for smart ass Dean. I can’t wait to see how this season unfolds.
October 9th, 2007 at 8:59 pm
LC likes Zeppelin and Hendrix? She’s officially my favorite person ever.
I’m super excited about her character, and I can’t wait to see her piss off the boys. XD
October 9th, 2007 at 10:38 pm
After reading this, I guess I got to know the character Bela better. Bela seems like a very sly person, but Lauren I can tell, is a nice, laid-back person…
October 10th, 2007 at 12:18 am
Great, just as big of a cliche as I figured. They couldn’t finally just add someone who is a thief and antagonist because she really is just selfish. Nope, she has to have the angsty past like the rest of the characters where they’re going to try and make us feel sorry for her so she can get some redemption arc. I hate that we essentially have what adds up to a third regular on the show. 50% per girl so an entire season with one or the other. I’m not looking forward to what will probably be opened up if they get another season since they’ll probably take it a step further and make them regulars like Jared and Jensen.
October 10th, 2007 at 2:36 am
And already we see the redemption route being played. She has had a lot of terrible things happen to her in the past which explains why she’s like she is…Give me strength, what an oh so predictable cliche! And she’s back next year too??!! Oh-hum…
October 10th, 2007 at 7:03 am
Why so bitter, Supernatural viewers? Why?
Just give the girl a chance before you toss her to the wolves, sheesh.
October 10th, 2007 at 7:06 am
Awesome interview! I wasn’t sure what to think about the girls when I first heard about them, but after reading this I’m very excited to see what Bela will bring to the table. It’ll be great to see a strong female character who isn’t the Buffy-clone we’re so often forced to endure on these types of shows. And Lauren seems like a real sweetheart!
October 10th, 2007 at 7:21 am
Mel, I ‘m with you. Why so bitter fans? It’s not like Kripke killed off Dean in Ep 4 so Sam would still break Bobby out of a Panama prison. I would rather see the bros dealing with series regual be-oches than random guest be-oches each week. I like the history. Go Bella! Although I am only liking Ruby because of her dad right now.
October 10th, 2007 at 8:52 am
I think Lauren seems like a very nice person but this character is one big cliche. I’ve read the sides for the episodes she’s in. The fairly sizeable scenes are entirely cliche’d interaction. Kripke and Singer both said more than once “We aren’t taking predictable paths with these characters”. I don’t know what predictable is to them but so far for Bela it has been entirely 100% predictable, right down to the “incredibly tragic things in her past” leading her right down that road to redemption to real regular status next season where she’ll likely been in every episode. Because, of course, she has to have had it even worse than the boys did. On what is supposed to be the Winchesters’ own show. Right now, alot of us were predicting every single thing she mentioned in this interview from the day the casting sides first got out into fandom so clearly whatever they have done with Ruby, they are being extremely predictable with Bela.
Having them on 12 episodes each for one thing shows Kripke’s lie “They won’t be in every episode, it’ll be one Ruby, one Bela, one the boys on their own”…well so far none have been on their own, except possibly one and that’s an episode where Dean and Sam are still only in maybe half the episode. At least they could have been honest but they knew if they did that people would run for the hills most likely because they ARE making major changes in the format and focus of the show.
October 10th, 2007 at 12:58 pm
I’m still not so sure about the addition of the girls to Supernatural but after seeing the season premiere last week i don’t think they will take anything away from the show, it’ll still mainly be about Sam and Dean, which is what we really want, but they could actually add to the drama which always unfolds when new characters arrive which will, of course, only bring Sam and Dean closer as brothers as the add the new battles with these two to the supernatural battles they fight during their everyday lives. Only time will tell, i just hope the shows makers will make the right decision if the girls don’t work out as hoped by them.
October 10th, 2007 at 1:34 pm
This character is a complete cliche. It’s not bitterness, it’s fact. Sam and Dean have had a horrid past but I’m sure Bela’s will be even worse so Dean can cry her a river.
Would it be too hard to ask for an antagonist worthy of this show? Or must everything be turned into the mundane? This was once a great and unique show, now, I fear, it goes by the way of the regular CW garbage that’s on. Supernatural, you had such high hopes. Alas, I guess the thrill of making the show like all the others was too much to resist. Blah.
October 10th, 2007 at 2:40 pm
I found it incredibly funny when Lauren said: “We’re not here to spice things up because the show’s already spicy” to cover up for Katie Cassidy’s quote in another interview earlier this year where she said: “We’re here to spice things up a little bit, cause a little trouble.”
October 10th, 2007 at 4:44 pm
I respect everyone’s opinions, but maybe we should reserve judgement until Bela has actually been in an episode and until Ruby has more than one line. I’ve read a couple of episode sides myself, and it’s incredibly difficult to understand tone and character from those write-ups. Take a deep breath and just enjoy the show.
And a big ditto to Patty, some of the girl-of-the-week guest stars have been pretty bad. How are they NOT a cliche?
October 10th, 2007 at 11:07 pm
I can’t believe she’s going to be in 50% of the episodes! When will Sam and Dean EVER get a scene together ALONE? Those have been the best moments of the show and now we’ll never see another one! WHY did they have to add two new regulars? (And don’t tell me they aren’t regulars, Katie Cassidy’s name was RIGHT after Jensen’s, NOT after “Guest Starring Jim Beaver” where it SHOULD have been if she was just ‘recurring’. And if she is, then so is this one.)
They’re not adding anything to the show that we want to see. I don’t want to see Dean and Sam continually smacked down by these characters! WHY would we want to see that? And please do NOT give Bela ANY part in the mythology! That would completely suck! The mythology is the WINCHESTERS’ story and no one else’s!
October 11th, 2007 at 2:00 am
I had issues from the beginning about them adding in two new recurring regulars for twelve episode each since it’s such a huge difference in the way things have gone so far. I found this show refreshing in Seasons 1 and 2 since it was different than most other shows out there and had the boys meeting new people throughout most of the seasons while recurring people like John, Bobby, and Ellen were around just once in awhile. Yes, they’ve run into some bad cliches with some of the guest characters too but at least when that happens, we know it’s only for an episode. In this case, we have two new characters that are signed on for so many episodes between them that it so far appears we’ll rarely get any episode without at least one of them there (again, HUGE change to a show which can’t avoid affecting the dynamic). Everything I’ve heard about Bela so far describes her as the kind of cliched character I hate the most (and I’d feel the same if it’d been a guy with this description). The selfish bad girl who isn’t really all that bad behind her masks because she’s just misunderstood and it’s all the fault of her tragic past. Of course it’ll most likely culminate once the heroes of the show open her eyes to how wrong she was so she can be redeemed. Yawn.
October 12th, 2007 at 9:55 pm
i love her. i think i’ll love bela. ’nuff said.
October 13th, 2007 at 3:57 pm
Love Bella already but I can’t stand Ruby.
October 14th, 2007 at 1:06 am
I don’t think that the fans biggest concern was ever about the girls being love interests. From what I’ve read, for some, it’s that the girls are barbie dolls and don’t appear to look/dress like what they expect a female hunter to be. (Maybe a little stronger and tougher and less polished looking?)
For others, it was that Kripke already tried this once and it didn’t take. (Jo wasn’t that bad, in hindsight, but I’d have thought it might have been a lesson to the writers/producers.) Perhaps their trust in his judgement is shaky. Maybe it would have been smart to introduce the characters before making them full on members of the cast. (Did Kripke learn nothing from the Jo debacle ? We loved Bobby, and they’re giving us more. Many hated Jo, so they gave us less. Why not try that with these additions?)
Lets’ get this straight: I watch the show for Sam and Dean.
I’m concerned because the powers that be, by adding two new “stars”, seem to be saying - we’re going to give you less of Sam and Dean each week, and here are these hot girls who are going to fill the space. I never thought the show was missing anything. I didn’t ever think - gosh, where are the chicks? I don’t want less Sam and Dean. I don’t want the focus to leave the brothers. They claim it won’t, but of course it will. How can you have characters be in half the season’s episodes and not have some of the focus be on who they are?
I’m guessing this change has more to do with giving Jared and Jensen shorter shooting schedules. Bela and Ruby could be interesting. The actresses both seem sweet and talented. It’s nothing personal. I just don’t want new characters that are in half the episodes eating up time that previously would have been devoted to Sam and Dean. I want MORE Sam and Dean, not less, but I’ll concede that the boys are overworked.
Instead of two new stars, gimme eight recurring characters. I’d prefer more characters along the lines of Gordon, Ellen, Jo, Missouri, Tamara = guest stars. People that come in and out, but aren’t ever-present, who are never the focus. (Who aren’t going to overstay their welcome.) Or, delve deeper into the monster of the week. Show more of the monster terrorizing the people. Give me flashbacks to the Winchester’s childhood and how they learned all this stuff. Add Ruby and Bela - just don’t put them in 12 episodes.
Remember when the X-files added the two other agents? Yeah…. I stopped watching the series around that time. For me, it’s one of those “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” things.
I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest that is what is upsetting the other fans is the fear of losing the “Sam and Dean” mojo that made this show so great in the first place. Judging from the negative reaction to the lack of shared onscreen time in S3E02, it seems more feasible than assuming we’re worried about “love interests.”
October 14th, 2007 at 11:39 am
thank youu for this interview! it was really interesting. i can’t wait to see what bela has instore for us!
October 14th, 2007 at 11:55 am
I still don’t like the idea of these girls being in so many episodes. The more I hear them being defended, the more pissed I get about it. The Bela and Ruby show is NOT the show I want to watch. Already by the second episode of the season we’ve got Sam and Dean so completely separate they could have been in different states for all the interaction they had.
October 14th, 2007 at 1:17 pm
Woah, that was an awesome interview and I must say, so far I haven’t read much about the girls, kinda not spoilery stuff only.
But Lauren seems to be a nice person and what she sad was lovely, so, I’m betting, that even IF perhaps the plot won’t be that good, which we don’t know yet, she’ll play her quite fine!
October 15th, 2007 at 2:45 am
Great interview and why in the hell is there so much negative energy here.
“I don’t like these girls being in so many episodes”
“they suck and annoying”
“Dean and Sam’s Mojo will be gone”
etc etc
Give these gals a chance. The season bearly even started and some of guys are already predicting “the Doom and Gloom” is near. You have no idea how long I waited for some female bad ass gals to be on the show. Seriously, all the female characters on this show so far have either died very quickly, disappeared for some reason, be one nite standers, be lovers but only appear in one episode. Man….the women on this show sure get the bad breaks. I know the show focuses on Sam and Dean….but aren’t the people around them part of their legacy as well?? Don’t the people around them make both Sam and Dean better people by helping them grow and develop as men?? As in you know….making the boyz show a different sides to them, increase in character etc etc.
I’m already solded on Ruby. Before episode 2, I thought she was interesting. After episode 2…..woooo….ok I’m on Ruby train. Come on now…a female demon gal who has her own agenda….way too cool. I mean it’s crazy how much stuff comes up just because of her. Why is she helping Sam and why is he so interested in him?? What does the YED really have in store for Sam. Could Ruby really be a “good” demon who just wants to help Sam or is she using him for a greater (probably evil) purpose?? Could she be related to the YED or maybe even be Meg. It’s crazy the possibilities
As for Bela…..after reading this interview, she has alot of potential to be interesting. I already love the actress (Lauren Cohan) that plays her. Very humble and nice. Besides….any gal that speaks with an british accent already gain alot of brownie points from me.
I really think these two gals will create a new dimension to the show. Don’t cut off these girls yet…..let’s see how it goes. Sam and Dean are great charcters but…they can’t develop as individuals if all they do is interact with ONLY each other. They need other characters to….well…”open new doors” and “expand their horizons”.
October 15th, 2007 at 3:07 am
what I meant at the end of the last part is
they can’t develop FURTHER as individuals if they only interact with each other. The brother bond that Dean and Sam have is great but…..sometimes they need different personalities to help them grow more
October 15th, 2007 at 7:19 am
No one’s saying they should only interact with each other and really I haven’t seen that as the case in the last two years either. They’re constantly on the road meeting new people. I don’t think the women get any worse of breaks on this show than the other male characters whose names aren’t Dean and Sam. We’ve seen their interaction with recurring characters like Bobby, John, Gordon, Ellen, Meg, etc too. I don’t have an issue with them continuing to add recurring characters, it’s that they added two people for up to 12 episodes each that I have an issue with. Maybe if they’d started out slower like perhaps 6 episodes each or something it would have created less problems for people because they’d be giving people time to get used to such a big change in the format and breaking them in slower. But instead, they’re throwing these two new characters at us right away and having them alternately appear nearly every episode of the season. Also if they wanted to increase some screentime for a badass female, they could have given some more Ellen’s way because she’s great.
October 15th, 2007 at 7:50 am
Brian (not the same Brian), thank you for such a thought out response. I don’t understand the hatred for the girls because everything is speculation and uneducated. We’ve not seen the final plans for the show. We’re currently heading into Episode 3… 3 out of 22 folks. That’s a long way to go and I feel that the show has not steered us wrong yet, so why are we questioning their creative decisions now? People were evil about Jo and I for one really enjoyed Jo and her interaction with the boys. Have some faith folks, sit back and watch the show we love.
The sense of entitlement is mind blowing…
October 16th, 2007 at 4:07 pm
you know, i think one of the main problems i have with this whole bela/ruby thing is: (sorry, i just slashed bela and ruby. oh well.)
they are billed ABOVE BOBBY AND ELLEN.
in my view, jury’s still out on cassidy. i like the fact that lauren cohan seems to have a brain, but until i see her, i’m still wondering what the heck is so important about her that she is billed above two awesome recurring characters that are very important, imho, to the storyline. and have been part of the cast for over a year now!! just for reference, i liked jo –alot –but didn’t think she was right for dean. however, i hope we get to see more of her. in fact, there were past several characters we’d like to see again: sarah blake, missouri, and btw… what really happened to Layla?
also, wtf about this interviewer making smartass remarks directed at fandom? doesn’t he realize members of the SPN fandom ARE PROBABLY THE ONLY PEEPS WHO ARE GONNA READ THIS???
talk about biting the hand that FEEDS. we are not stupid, thank you. we’d like to see more support for credible characters who are already in canon. the way the CW is promoting these characters in the promo shots was insulting to Jensen and Jared –who didn’t even get promo pix. we noticed. we support our show and certainly want Jensen & Jared to get some well-deserved rest, but are suspicious of the real reason for these particularly blatantly sexy new characters.

WTF is up with this interviewer is that he has attended Comic-Con where girls were ready to claw the eyes out of anyone who mentions the girls names. This interviewer is also someone who’s had a great number of conversations with supernatural fans who also were so up in arms about the girls that he was shocked at all the vitriol being spewed.
Hi, I’m Dan aka Ducky and I’m a huge HUGE fan of Supernatural and lover of said “fandom”. I don’t think I was making assumptions in stating that people were wanting these girls heads on a platter. Read the comments, without seeing one single frame of film with either of these girls there’s already so much backlash. My only hope is that people give it a chance and trust the writers enough to not ruin the show we all love.
True, no new promo shots of the boys have been issued to date and I will talk to my Warner Bros reps to find out if some are in the can. The two that were released for the girls have not been confirmed as real promo shots for SPN. There are the episodic shots of the girls but there are also ones of the boys. The reason the girls have been featured is to create buzz for their arrival. It’s the same that would happen on any other show that was introducing new characters. Look at Grey’s Anatomy, a completely different genre so you may not like it but front and center on every single promo is newbie Lexie Grey. You could make the same argument there.
My only issue is and has always been that we’re pre-judging the girls and questioning the person who brought us such a killer show to begin with. Period. Faith is all I’m asking for.
As for bringing old characters back, I’m all for it! How about throwing AMY ACKER back in the mix! A Season 1 fave for me and the rest of the Angel fans out there!

so, she’s in 50% and Ruby’s in the other half. Great.
Ruby’s introduction was retarded.
Way to kill a cool show, show….

I love this place !!
Finally I found some other unhappy folks daring to share their opinion.
I’m not gonna lie… I had a complete negative pre-judgement prior to premiere.
What is left after 3 eps… the same fear, maybe even more since some of my fears are coming true. I read the sides and they are not easing my doubts and believe me when I say I’d like it too be different. I did put all my faith and trust in MrK and his team. So far… i’m disappointed. It’s like they are trying too hard, way too hard to make us accept the new girls. So like others said before it comes out cliché-style. 3 episodes is not enough to judge fully I know that and I will keep my hopes up but I lost the excitement I had the other seasons and that’s never a good sign.
I’m not liking that Bela is being added some “scary” background… where’s the need. She’s an a$$… ok let her be an a$$ I don’t have any problem with that, but why feel complied to have “incredibly terrible things happen to her”… do all thieves have that background ? Let us know how she first became aware of the supernatural world and that’s enough for me.
About Ruby… WTF… seriously…
“in my opinion the introduction of Ruby in the season premiere proved that you can bring on kick ass female characters that add to the dynamic instead of taking away from it” : Dan/Ducky, really ?? the over-cliché “I’m the girl who saved your ass” line ?? does that comfort you ?? It was the worst line EVER given a character in this show… and that was supposed to impress me ? I know I’m not a professional caster/agent/actor/producer/whatever-in-the-biz-person but come on they surely could have come up with a better actress than that girl. What am I happy about so far ?? 3 eps gone, 2 with her that leaves only 10 more to endure with her… way to look up to the future. woohoo. And it’s horrible but with everybody repeating that the fandom has been overreacting this summer I now feel complied to defend myself and my opinion. I have nothing against the Ruby character… I just am far from convinced by the actress. And for the record… I had nothing against Jo.
“the whole uprising was ridiculous”… who can tell what would have happened if the fandom hadn’t reacted that way ??? How long did the CW/MrK take to make some PR about the Rubela thing ?? If really no love interest was planned from the beginning, why wait so long to face us and explain ? Plus if I recall correctly, MrK never ruled the love interest completely… he said that depending on the on-screen chemistry between the character who could tell what would happen… so i’m not sure our reaction was ridiculous.
And I’m all for more old recurring characters. Loved Ellen (and at least she was credible on screen)… hell they waited until 2 days ago to contact her for a “possible” gig ??? Waouh… I’m impressed… what was the point in bringing her back in AHBL2 do make her disappear completely and not even be mentioned for half a season !!! Not to talk about Jo who apparently was just erased from earth’s surface. The writers seem to easily forget what happened in previous episodes… I get that you can’t stay in touch with all the guest characters (Missouri/Sarah/Cassie…) but at least be logical with recurring ones… or just kill them off properly.
So yeah for all these reasons I’m so far disappointed and not specially excited for the future of my previously favourite show.
