BONES Recaps With MEL
Episode 3.03 “Death in the Saddle”
Are any of you guys CSI fans? If so, I’m betting you remember the Plushy/Furry episode, right? Yeah, this was pretty much the ‘Furry’ episode of Bones. A man was found with his hands bound, his feet cut off, his eyes gouged out and a hole in his head. Also, Angela was hypnotized but not really, but ended up remembering the name of her husband- I think it was Grasen or something. The Angela/Hodgins/Husband thing is still pretty funny, but I hope it doesn’t overstay it’s welcome.
So basically, the evidence led our intrepid duo to the very - ahem - interesting world of sexual horse fetishes. As in, one is the horse, the other the rider (that’s what she said!). The vic, a “pony”, of course, was called Mr. Ed. To be quite honest, it was a pretty run-of-the-mill whodunnit- Mr. Ed’s madam, Annie Oakley (I’m totally serious) killed him because he was going back to his wife, though she left her husband for him. So, yeah, jealousy’s a heinous beeyotch, but it gave the characters a lot of material to get their pun on with:
Brennan: Excuse me! We need to speak to Mr. Ed’s groom! Who rode him last?
Ha! I loved it- Bones even had some jokes ready for Booth:
Booth: Hey
Brennan: Hay is for horses.
Booth: Hey, that’s funny, Bones.
Brennan: I found it on a website about horses.
Booth: Yeah?
Brennan: Where do horses stay in a hotel?
Booth: In the Bridle Suite.
Brennan: That’s correct.
Booth: Mm hm. So did you find out anything useful?
Brennan: The hooves of champion thoroughbreds are buried separately from the corpses. The hooves represent power and are given their own resting spot. Our victim’s feet were separated from his body.
Booth: But our victim’s wife said he was at a corporate retreat. His boss said he took time off to spend with his family.
Brennan: He lied.
Booth: Yeah, they could all be lying.
Brennan: How did you know the answer to the Bridle Suite joke?
Booth: I have a five year old son.
I never get sick of the playfulness between those two, but the heartfelt moments they share are some of the best on TV. At the end, they’re winding down at the diner (Hi, Diner!! We missed you!!), and are, as usual, arguing about the aforementioned case. Booth doesn’t seem to understand why sexual role playing is even necessary to anyone, but Bones is resistant to his reasoning, so he lays this doozy on her:
Booth: Here we are, all of us basically alone, separate creatures, just circling each other, all searching for the slightest hint of a real connection. Some look in the wrong places, some give up hope because in their mind they’re thinking, “Oh there’s just nobody out there for me,” but all of us keep on trying over and over again. Why? Because every once in a while- every once in a while- two people meet and there’s that spark. And, yes, Bones, he’s handsome and she’s beautiful and maybe that’s all they see at first. But making love… making love… that’s when two people become one.
Brennan: It’s scientifically impossible for two objects to occupy the same space
Booth: Yeah, but what’s important is we try. And when we do it right? We get close.
Brennan: To what? Breaking the law of physics?
Booth: Yeah, Bones. A miracle.
It’s a total cheesefest when you read it, but David Boreanaz is so earnest and serious and he completely sells this in the most sincere way possible. And it’s them- he’s talking about himself and Brennan. I don’t care that neither of them ever say it out loud. It really - to me - just makes it better. Booth is so handsome and Brennan’s so delicate and lovely, but it’s much, much more than that. It’s about the inherent connection that two people have that just makes them perfect for each other. Neither can explain it or tell you why it’s there, but it is, and it’s somehow uplifting and heartbreaking all at the same time to watch these two people dance around what’s undeniably apparent. The look on Brennan’s face when Booth lays this on her is so sweet and tiny and sad, and the whole scene is a really natural mix of Brennan and Booth, and David and Emily. Fantastic.
So, any fave lines? Did the B/B moment at the end rate up there with Jasper or the chin touch? Or did Bones yelling “Testicles!” just make you wet yourself with laughter? Cause, seriously, I almost had to change mine.

That last part from Booth was my favorite! And I am in no way a cheese head. Normally, I might vomit in my mouth a little over lines like that but that character is so freaking sincere! I love the play between Booth and Brennan. I very much look forward to this show every week.

I fully agree, Patty- David Boreanaz is so truthful and genuine, and he really makes Booth real. They’re probably my second fave duo on TV, right after the Taylors (call me, Connie!!)
This show just gets better and better.

I love the last part! Their conection on the serie is really good, you really get involved on their sarcastic humor, plus the scientific humor of bones…I think we got some new ‘Mulder&Scully’ magic relation, thanks I saw this episode yesterday and booth words are speaking on my mind since that.
