DEXTER Comic-Con Poster - Panel

You know that this was one of my most anticipated panels and you know that there was a little part of me that thought I might wake up wrapped in plastic with a slight knick out of my right cheek… I’m just sayin! In other words, I had high hopes for the DEXTER panel and I was not disappointed. Well not completely; I would have killed to see Jennifer Carpenter but I’ll survive.

After the bore that was HBO’s True Blood panel, I was dying to see Kristin Dos Santos’ funky spunky approach at moderating Dex Morgan and Co. She’s such a fangirl that she always injects a crazy fun dose of frenetic energy into any panel she’s a part of and she did not let me down.

The panel kicked off with a never before seen extended trailer for Season 3 (premiering September 28th) that teased us about how the student is becoming the teacher (cue Dr. Horrible’s evil laugh)! Deb’s got shorter hair; there’s a botched job; Jimmy Smits’ family values obsessed ADA Prado made an appearance and overall it just looks kick ass.

Watch the full kick ass Dexter Season 3 Trailer:

Michael C. Hall (Dexter), Julie Benz (Rita), Clyde Phillips (Exec. Producer), another writer (how could I forget her name) took that stage and the bloody fun began.

  • If Season 1 was about learning and Season 2 was about good vs. evil, naturally Season 3 would be a throw back to good old fashion family values and the evolution of Dexter as a man. The need for Dexter to connect with another human will continue to be explored as will his quest to catch up as a human being.
  • We learned that Deb will be getting a more normal relationship later in Season 3 but one that will be unexpected. That means no more quirky Agent Lundy folks.
  • Harry’s suicide makes Dex try and put Harry and his code behind him but something in Episode 1 will force him to reevaluate the code. Can’t escape that huh?
  • Hall says that Dexter has “come a long way” (which gave this dirty panel audience a giggle)

  • The debate on how to keep the series going and how to balance the humanizing of Dexter is always ongoing in the writers room. They realize that if we ever see a fully feeling Dexter, the series is over.
  • The decision to kill Doakes was made very early on in the series, Phillips said that when he was introduced in the pilot he had a short shelf life. Hall loved being able to work with Erik King one on one in those final episodes and that awww shucks, he misses him.
  • Julie Benz would love to make an appearance on Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse. Somehow Darla can be worked into that show as well, right?

  • Michael C. Hall’s favorite kills were Little Chino’s and Jimenez (his Mother’s killer).
  • If you’re a fan of the books you know that eventually Rita’s son Cody starts exhibiting some of young Dexter’s character traits which leads our hero to take him under his wing… that will not happen in the series and is now what “the student becomes the teacher” is about.
  • Finally, while they couldn’t reveal much about Season 3, they did reiterate that there’s a huge shocking reveal in the premiere that sets in motion something that Dexter cannot pull back from and that will change his life forever! Speculation is crazy at the moment with people talking about Rita possibly being preggers or Deb slowly realizing who her Brother really is… All I know is that if Rita is knocked up I’m going to be pissed.
  • Michael C. Hall has this really dry wit about him that really makes you wonder just how much of Dex is really behind his eyes. It’s crazy hot if you’re asking me. Julie Benz was stunning and it really speaks volumes about the power of comfy casuals and no make up at the core of Rita. The audience seemed jazzed to learn anything about our favorite serial killer and left satisfied.

After the panel we hit the Dexter Game Launch Party at Airport, some swanky little bar here in town where Hall made a very brief appearance. If you’re wondering, what the hell are you talking about? A Dexter Game? then listen up kiddies.

Marc Ecko popped into the panel to give us all the gory details! He loved the show so much that he acquired the rights to make a serialized and innovative game to be played with the iPhone and iPod Touch!

It will be episodic and uses the features of the iPhone like SMS texting, phone calls and most importantly the phones motion sensing accelerometer for real action kills and game play. Hells yeah!

The party was a blast and gave us some time to chat with other online media outlets and more importantly the Showtime folks who are trying to make Dexter a household name! While there is no ETA for Dexter The Game, I’ll keep you posted as further details roll out!

Why pissed at the possibility that Rita’s preggers? That might just bring about some serious conflicts up in Dexter’s life. Just as he seems to be coming into his own - not relying on Harry’s code (or at least so he thinks) along might come something that throws him into a world beyond his control, beyond his understanding and his own perceived ability to connect, and something that might seriously throw a wrench into his night-time activities. I like the idea

I sensed some disappointment in the audience about the game platform - but hell, I’m happy! I have an iphone. Cool about the party! But how much of a household name do we want Dexter to be?
