Chuck vs Santa Claus: Chuck and Casey

I’m sitting at home Friday morning when I heard such a clatter, I sprang from my desk to see what was the matter. Away to the door I flew like a flash to see my trusty man in brown with the nice calves.

It wasn’t a major award labeled “Fraile” but it was a shiny little present from Warner Bros..

I open the puppy up and what to my wondrous eyes does appear but a letter from Josh Schwartz and tonight’s episode of CHUCK (vs Santa Claus)!

I rushed back to my laptop, threw open the lid and settled in for a long winters viewing of what was sure to be yet another Schwartz holiday treat.

I was a huge fan of the 1st Chrismukkah (The O.C. Season 1 FTW – hell I even bought one of the yamaclaus caps) so I was dying to see what Schwartz and Fedak would do with Bartowski and Co. this holiday season.

I have to say that Chuck vs. Santa Claus is one of my favorite Chuck episodes ever. Not only is it action packed, full of hilarity and hijinks, it’s probably the sweetest episode they’ve ever produced. You will not be disappointed in tonight’s episode and to all my friends who follow me on Twitter, thanks for dealing with my play by play tweets while you were sitting at work hating my guts!

After the jump, I’ve written down my thoughts on the episode as it plays out. There are some minor spoilers and plot points so beware…

  • As “Jingle Bell Rock” plays, Big Mike and Emmett celebrate a high priced Buy More Xmas – gotta love the addition of Tony Hale to the cast and his willingness to do anything for the Buy More.
  • Sarah reflects on family and her wacky Christmas’ while Chuck invites her to celebrate Xmas at the Bartowski’s. Chuck calls her bluff on being all Scrooge-like but she reminds Chuck that Xmas at the Burton household meant Salvation Army con jobs – yeah, not all roses and kittens for Jenny Burton!
  • OMG Morgan and the rest of the Nerd Herd are dressed as Elves – seriously I’m waiting for a full on Elf Yourself dance number.
  • Capt. Awesome got himself a ski vacation from Ellie without her knowing – he needs a little danger in his life…. cue the high speed chaser that crashes through the Buy More and holds our friends hostage!
  • Casey wants to storm the Buy More exposing Chuck to everyone including Ellie and Awesome. Sarah’s the more rational one and obviously they go with her plan.
  • General Beckman gets the best line of the show: “This is an electronics store Agent Casey, not Bazra”
  • HAHA! Big Mike’s Big Cousin Al (Reginald VelJohnson) is basically playing the same role as he did in DIE HARD, genius!
  • Emmett with a LUCAS reference. Obviously Ned never knew of his nickname Lukaplakia. I’m dying…
  • Casey gets shot in the foot and loses a toe which Jeff and Lester decide might be worth a finders fee to Casey. It’s black-toe-mail.
  • Awesome wants to be the hero and tries to implore the Herd which doesn’t sit well with Ellie. Shocker.
  • Chuck convinces Ned to let everyone call their loved ones and Lester calls a 1-800 number while Jeff calls someone in Prison. “Johnnyboy” Casey calls his Mommy and Chuck calls Sarah. Awwwwww.
  • Chuck’s Xmas gift to Sarah… j’adorable and incredibly sweet and sentimental. “Oh Chuck, I can’t take this – this is something you give to a real girlfriend” “I know…” *swoons*
  • Everyone’s reaction to Chuck not wanting Sarah to be one of the hostages to leave. “Ouch” “It’s gonna be a cold Christmas at the Bartowski’s” “Oh no he didn’t”
  • And of course the minute Casey and Sarah are out of the way, Chuck flashes on a Fulcrum agent aka the LAPD negotiating officer who happens to flip everything by knowing everything about Chuck, Casey and Sarah. Guess who’s become the only target in the room?
  • Damn Jeff and his elf bells. Poor guy.
  • Poor Morgan and his un-noticed chivalry.
  • “Silent Night” and a Chuck/Sarah moment made me cry. I never thought CHUCK would make me cry but dammit it did.
  • The Big reunion = hilarious
  • I love that the show ends with a sweet moment between Chuck and Morgan, much needed and the perfect moment to end the show with.

Love the ‘Stubborn You Bet’ slogan behind Casey. How appropriate.

    4. Emily says:

As if there aren’t already enough Chucks on TV, the writers had to throw in another Chuck/Ned situation!

Great episode overall. Lots of laughs and Big Mike’s cousin turning out to be Al the cop from the first Die Hard was a nice touch.

Nice fake-out about the incident. Turned out it was not just the execution but Sarah’s bald face lie too. It all comes back to the trust issue again.

Love the parallel with Morgan and Anna too.

How long before Chuck calls Sarah on her lie? I’m betting it will be in 2.14.

Imagine if Chuck finds out about the termination order on him now? No way he will trust Sarah on this.

Put this one up in the top two or three for the season.

Loved having Reginald VelJohnson playing Al Powell again, 20 years after he played the same role in DIE HARD! I wasn’t looking at the screen when he first came on, but I heard that distinctive voice and heard him saying “Al Powell” and had to rewind to play the scene again. Brilliant!!

Chuck has had a fantastic season so far. Now we have to wait ’til February? Eesh!
