So You Think You Can Dance Season 5 Auditions

Our final night of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE auditions takes us to Los Angeles and Seattle. As we’re coming to the end of the first looks, I’m sad to say that there are really no stand outs for Season 5. I haven’t been completely blown away or surprised by any of the performances this season and that scares me a little bit. I’m also nervous that a SYTYCD Season 5 Boyfriend hasn’t even appeared for the slightest of seconds yet. I mean, let’s face it… that’s part of the fun in watching the show.

In L.A. Adam Shankman finally joined Toothy and Mary for some Judging action and not a moment too soon. After last night’s Tyce debacle, I need a respectable gay up there holding court! Welcome back Shankman, we love you! Also in the house are Season 4 vets Comfort Fedoke, Katee Shean and Winner Joshua Allen. On with the show…

LOS ANGELES AUDITIONS:
Starting off the night was returning tapper Bianca Revel who looks a hell of a lot like Real World vet Aneesa but taps like Gregory Hines. She’s got a great personality, some killer hair and an adorable Mom. Girl, get your ass to Vegas!

Brynelle and Xaviar Blanton have to be the oddest brother and sister coupling since Angelina made out with her brother on the Red Carpet back in the blood vile days. I loved watching this audition because it was like the two of them examined every contemporary dance routine the show’s ever aired and tried to incorporate it into their try-out. The best part is that they have no training or comfort in their movements. It was so awkward that I had to watch it a couple times. What was with Brynelle’s eye shadow? They’re not really brother and sister are they? Can’t be.

Zaftig Debra Lawson was amazing! She was by no means a great dancer but that girl worked it out and had a blast! I don’t know about that whole Orthodox thing but I do know that she had some good moves. How funny was it when the music stopped and Nigel thought she was done, only to have the song burst to life and Debra spring back into action? Genius, I was dying.

The whole time I was watching 30 year old Calico Sequeria do her swingin’ I kept thinking that she’d be really good in a club or VW hall somewhere and it I had to pat myself on the back when Nigel called her out for being a social skilled dancer. Look at me with my trained eye (riiiight!). Can we talk about how much she must have been dying when Shankman got on stage with her? Oh and I love that his age was listed as 21-ish. Boy can move, no?

International Latin Ballroom couple Asuka Kondoh and Ricky Sun are back for another try. Asuka made it to the final cut in Vegas last year and I really enjoy watching her. Is she as good as an Anya? Not really but girl can move and the camera loves her. The stripper dress was a little much and if I’m being honest, I totally forgot about Ricky. Sorry dude. Shankman’s pushing Asuka down the stairs comment FTW! I love that guy.

Once again they blew through a number of interesting dancers that hopefully we’ll see more from in Vegas and again I hate when they do that.

Jailbait Nathan Trasoras is the first guy in contention for Ducky (and presumably GMMR’s) Season 5 Boyfriend. He’s tall, dark, handsome, talented, rosy cheeked and j’adorable. I watched his audition 3x because it was *that* good. OMFG, I’m dying… he’s only 17 and ineligible for Season 5. I’m so sad. Luckily though he got a ticket to Vegas for Season 6, so there you have it. See you in the fall Jailbait!

Day 2 in Los Angeles brought 19 year old Sammy Ramirez to the stage and he’s a fun popper/locker. The best part of his audition was watching Cat do some wrestling moves. Is he the best popper we’ve seen? No but the kid’s damn good. He’s a Jr. Robert Muraine and I have my fingers crossed that he does well in choreography.

Stacey House was the spaz sporting the Olivia “Physical” outfit and dancing to Eurythmics “Sweet Dreams” and she had me rollin’. Obviously she not right for the show but it cracked a smile on my face and that works for me tonight!

Amanda Kerby is the sickening sweet American girl and her backstory involves a sick Dad with MS. Was she amazing? Hardly. Was she good enough? Sure. I feel like her nerves were getting the best of her because its apparent she has the training but she wasn’t landing everything which means there was something going on.

Phillip Chbeeb showed up and because he got sick last season, Nigel just called him off stage and handed him a ticket to Vegas even though he was there as a couple this season! I love that kid!!! Arielle Coker worked with Phillip and taught him partnering. Their blending contemporary with Phillips’s style was interesting. Thankfully she’s got the skills to make it to Vegas and stand out on stage next to that kid.

The auditions continued with Alexi Agdeppa who had a wonderfully gorgeous routine, Diana Vaden that sauced up what we normally know as contemporary, and “crazy” Chanel Smith joined the choreography crew. Chanel was cut, Sammy Ramirez made it to Vegas as did Diana and Alexi.

Shakiro, I just can’t…

The Seattle auditions are after the jump… (more…)
