Last night, SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE did something amazing, they gave us a look at what each of the Top 20 dancers can actually do! Before throwing the Top 10 guys and Top 10 girls directly to the “random” couplings and “random” styles we were able to witness why these kids were chosen in the first place. Bravo SYTYCD!
Too bad my DVR didn’t record the frakkin’ hour! At 11pm last night when I sat down to watch the brilliance Twitter had prepped me for, I almost passed out to discover it was not there.
Thanks to the power of the interwebs (specifically http://mjsbigblog.com/), this morning I’m able to watch and comment on some of the dances and Cat’s new crop of babies.
Wade and Amanda Robson’s group number may be the best group dance this show has ever seen. I’m not kidding, it’s cramazing! When the 3rd gang, the all boy gang, hit the stage I lost my breath a little. Whomever is featured front and center on that (too digitized online to truly tell who it was) portion is my new SYTYCD Boyfriend. The way that boy moved was pure sin!
If you, like me, missed the number here it is (while YouTube keeps it posted):
Wade Robson’s Group Number – “Comanche” by The Revels:
What SYTYCD did so brilliantly was introduce the dancers in choreographed groups.
Kevin Hunte, Legacy and Russell Ferguson are our Hip-Hop boys this year. Seriously, some of the tricks those kids did in their NappyTabs routine were out of control! That Legacy kid (oy with the name) can moooooove. I’m psyched to see what Krumper Russell will bring to the competition. Honestly an amazing routine. (Watch the Performance)
The first group of Contemporary Jazz kids (Jakob Karr, Nathan Trasoras, Channing Cooke, Ariana Debos) worked it to Tyce Diorio’s “Crying” by K.D. Lang. Onstage, Channing reminded me of GLEE’s Quinn Fabray and Jakob was a dead ringer for TRUE BLOOD’s Godric – I’m just sayin’. Ariana had some killer moves and the pirouettes Nathan did were OOC! I felt at times the dancers were dancing by themselves, not as a group, but I can forgive that because it was quite fantastic. (Watch the Performance)
My friend Beth twittered “what genius decided it was a good idea to put tapdancers dressed all in b&w in front of a b&W backdrop, for god’s sake???” and I couldn’t agree more. What the hell were you thinking SYTYCD Producers? It looked ridonkulous. Phillip Atmore, Bianca Revels, Peter Sabatino and everyone related to the show need to tone down the “history in the making” comments… we get it – tap is back… (Watch the Performance)
Going into this Jazz routine by Sonya Tayeh, these girls had the biggest job of impressing me. Not only do they have the 3 most dowdy names in SYTYCD history (Ellenore Scott, Mollee Gray and Pauline Mata) that Mollee girl annoys me. I love me some Sonya but this was the most boring, un-cohesive number of the night. Pauline may have been the best? I can’t tell… I was bored. (Watch the Performance)
It should be no surprise here that the 2nd group of Contemporary dancers blew me away. It featured Billy Bell, Victor Smalley, Noelle Marsh, Kathryn McCormick dancing a Mandy Moore routine to Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” – slamdunk! I will confess here and now that I shed a slight tear during this number. It was beautiful, masterfully danced and breathtaking to watch. That Victor is a tall hunka-hunka something on that stage, no? Excellent performances by all four dancers.
Watch Mandy Moore’s Contemporary Routine:
By now you’ve heard that Billy Bell had to leave the competition for medical reasons and is being replaced by Brandon Dumlao (Hip-Hop). It was announced yesterday afternoon and after watching this performance, it’s a HUGE loss to the show.
As I wrote on twitter after watching his cramazing performance: “It is a damn shame to lose Billy Bell from #SYTYCD because that boy brought a killer energy and brilliance to that stage.”
Sadly the statement still omits what his illness is and I guess we don’t need to know. I personally hope Billy gets better and comes to rock our worlds in Season 7!
The official statement from the Bell Family:
Billy’s family would like to thank all of the fans that came out to show their support for Billy this season. It has been an amazing experience for all of us and has really meant a lot to Billy. We feel like Billy made it through all of the tough auditions and now that the fun was beginning, he has to leave the show. We were all very disappointed when we heard the news and Billy was devastated when his doctors told the show that if he continued to dance on the show before he recovered, he could possibly die. It will take several weeks for him to recover and as a result, he will be unable to return to Juilliard as of right now. We are hoping he will be able to return in the Spring. Billy is still quite ill but was released from the hospital today. He’s feeling better but still needs to rest.
As of right now, Billy is hoping to re-audition for Season 7. He really enjoyed working with the show and had a lot of fun. Although he is sad that he will not be a part of Season 6, he hopes that the producers will allow him to return for the next season. If you would like to wish Billy a speedy recovery, I’m sure he would appreciate it. You can do so by posting on the facebook fan page or his facebook.
Thank you so much for sharing your love and support with our family.
The Bell Family
Thanks to our friends over at SYTYCDISM for originally posting the statement.
On with the dancing…
Jason Gilkison gave the Ballroom trio (Ryan and Ashleigh DiLello, Karen Hauer) some supposedly sexy sassy Samba to work introduce them to the world. Personally I was pretty bored. I think knowing that Ryan and Ashleigh are a married couple makes me not want them to do well. I’m an asshole, I know this. Something about them just rubs me the wrong way. Ryan’s suit wasn’t doing anything for me either. That white piping on that horribly round breasted jacket was a serious distraction. (Watch the Performance)
Overall I have to say that I’m more impressed with the level of dancing than I have been since Season 2. There is some unreal talent on that stage this season, I just hope it continues as these kids start getting mixed up in styles that are not their own.
Possible SYTYCD Boyfriends this season: Jakob, Nathan and Victor
And the Winner of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE Season 5 is…
We just finished the finale and cannot believe that the season is over. For our final SYTYCD podcast of the season we examine the results, the Judges Choice Encore performances, and the big surprise of the night!
Find out which Judge we wished was shanked; which Judge needed a new top; which podcast host was almost murdered tonight and which podcast host performed a Season 6 audition piece!
There’s a lot of laughter, a few screams, some tears and even a moment of terror jam packed into this finale podcast so listen up and join in on the discussion.
Thanks for an amazing season and we’ll be talking SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE once again this fall.
The Top 6 from SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE Season 5 performed which means Kath and Dan are back for another podcast. With each contestant performing 4 routines, there’s plenty to talk about.
There’s a quickstep, some disco action, a cramazing contemporary routine, some not so amazing hip-hop and some banoodles solo numbers.
We spy on Kath’s new neighbor; we ponder the likeness of a certain contestant to a certain vampire on TRUE BLOOD; we complain about some choreographers; we forget some choreographers names and probably put our feet in our mouths more than once!
A week from the finale, we also discuss how this season has played out, our feelings about the results so far and declare who the winner of SYTYCD Season 5 should be.
The TV Talk Podcast: So You Think You Can Dance Edition is back! Kath and Dan break down the Top 7 Couples, their performances, the Judges comments, the outfits and whether or not some of these Judges are bangin’.
Kath reveals her Season 5 SYTYCD Boyfriend while Dan reveals how we were almost arrested recording this puppy.
The Top 14 dance for their lives and we decide who should stay and who should really just call it a day.
The return of one of my favorite telvision shows is just around the corner! It’s not possible is it? Is it almost that time of year again? My windows were open all day, it was 70 degrees here in Boston and that means summer is almost upon us. You know what summer brings don’t you? It brings Lythgoe, Murphy, Shankman and the goddess herself Cat Deeley back to my television screen!!!
Welcome to So You Think You Can Dance Season 5:
SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE Season 5 premieres Thursday, May 21st at 8pm.
Thanks to reader and buddy ColoradoKila for the tip about this past weekend’s MAD TV skit mocking So You Think You Can Dance. Not only are the impressions hilarious, they’re not too far off from the real thing. The Mary Scream slayed me everytime. Ew and that Nigel? So hideous that it’s brilliant.
Hey gang, I’m sorry that most of this season’s recaps have been in either podcast format or on AfterElton but I appreciate your continued interest in my coverage of the show! You guys rock!
Last night’s actual finale was incredible! The energy was high, the dancers were on point and overall the majority of the dances they showcased were my faves. I have to take Mia to task for her saying that his season had the best choreography of any other… oh honey that’s so not the case. Aside from the initial season, this was the worst sampling of choreography I’ve seen in a long time. Sure the addition of Sonya and the Aussie were great but when NappyTabs are your staples week after week, I have to question the overall quality. Even Mia failed miserably this season with her heinous finale routine so again, it wasn’t the best the show’s ever seen.
My favorite part of the night was hands down, the return of my faves… The Best of SYTYCD! I loved catching up with the kids from Seasons 1-3 and the group dance was banoodles to say the least. Travis and Neil in the same routine almost made both of my heads burst from the crazy greatness. Hok, Dom and Ryan were working it as usual. Jailbait Ivan killed out there, the kid is supa-fresh. Allison’s leg extensions are out of this world and I wondered if that high kick he does was her favored method of birth. Can you believe that bitch has a kid? What?!! How sexy ass were Anya and Dmitry all spinning around the stage? Hotness! Hell even Benji was fantastic! The question still remains…
WHERE THE HELL IS SABRA JOHNSON? I know she’s alive because GMMR has pictures of her from the Fox Upfronts but where the hell is that little pixie of a girl? The radio silence on Sabra has me wondering if she’s the biggest disappointment of all the winners so far. I mean come on girl, what are you up to?
Mary and Dmitry were awesome and it was great to see Nigel final gets ta steppin’ but didn’t he creep you out a little? He was like some pedophile leading the children to the underbelly of hell.
I guess I’m happy with Joshua Allen winning but I really was pulling for Katee. Yes you read that right, I was hoping Katee Shean would win. She was my least favorite heading into the competition but in the end, the girl could kick everyone’s ass. She was flawless but her lack of personality is what done did her wrong in the end. I loved that she scored a fat $50k though! That’s pretty sweet.
Ah, it’s over… I pray that next season will be spectacular and everything I want my SYTYCD to be because this season left me a little “meh”

I know I’ve been down on So You Think You Can Dance for a couple weeks but my overall love for the series hasn’t faltered… know that going into this. Last night I was completely dissatisfied with the Season 4 finale and it was so much so that at one point I was actually pissed off I was watching 2 hours worth of the show.
There was only 1 routine that I feel was worthy of being in the finale and it was also the only routine that really showcased why these people were in the finale. No I’m not talking about the Russian Trepak which I loathed, I’m talking about the man, the myth, the legend Wade Robson’s number that Katee and Joshua performed. It was the only routine all night that made me think, these kids are frakkin’ banoodles! It was dark, emotional, haunting and absolutely gorgeous to watch. I was sincerely wow’d by this number but that’s where my excitement ended sadly.
So before someone has an aneurysm I’ll talk about the Twich/Joshua Russian Trepak. I understand that it was meant to showcase their strenght and their amazing abilities but I don’t think it was all that. The posturing and the chest pumping was annoying considering no one has pit these two against each other all season, so to make a fake rivalry now is ridiculous. I’ve seen Twitch and Joshua spin and jump higher and faster than they did last night so I felt it added nothing to the competition… other than hospital visits. This is the number that sent both boys to the hospital over the weekend and I can see why. They damn near killed themselves doing a number that came nowhere near the talent we saw in Season 2 or 3 between Benji and Travis, Danny and Neil. Those were dances that showcased each dancers talent while still fitting the spirit of the show and of the competitive nature between them. This was just whack… and I know I’m in the minority here.
So You Think You Can Dance winds down this week and at last night’s taping of the Finale performance episode, it looks like things went a little different than they normally do. From what I can cull together online, they did multiple tapings and each one had different segments that would fit into both the Wed and Thur episodes.
Everything I’ve been able to get my dirty little spoiler hungry hands on is listed after the jump… (more…)
I know that I’ve been in radio silence regarding So You Think You Can Dance for the last few weeks but I’ve been a busy boy. I never watched more than 3 routines from the week Will and Comfort went home so I still don’t have much to report on that front. As I mentioned in my spoiler post earlier this week, I didn’t shed a tear or really even care that Will got the boot last week and that got me thinking…
Do I even care about SYTYCD this season? Of course the easy answer is yes! The more complicated question to ask though is how much?
A few weeks back I found myself getting really annoyed with having to invest 2 hours and 100 dances on a Wednesday night. Never in the history of my watching the show had I wanted less SYTYCD and I admit it’s crazy talk. Last week when I missed both episodes, I had no interest in going back and trying to watch the routines, the judges reactions and more importantly the contestant reactions to the supposedly shocking ouster.
This week I watched both the Wednesday night performances and the Thursday night eliminations back to back and found myself fast forwarding through the majority of both episodes so obviously I’m way over Season 4 of SYTYCD.
At this point I have zero interest in going to the SYTYCD Tour (all the air just sucked out of the room you’re reading this in) because I don’t really care about any of the dancers. I love my Marky Mark and it pained me to see him go last night (read my recap at AfterElton.com) but I didn’t scream or jump up and down in horror when he left. I think Twitch is a great personality but I think we’ve seen everything he’s got to offer and now we’re just killing time until the finale. Same goes for every contestant on the show.
Oddly, the two I’m most excited about in the Top 4 are Joshua and Katee. As you may recall, Katee was Enemy #1 when this competition began and I wished for her demise for the first couple weeks. Now I think she’s the one that excites me most and if her and Joshua continue to fly through the air like acrobats from Cirque du Soleil, I’ll have to reconsider my stance on the tour because their Contemporary routine this week was banoodles!
Alas I’m torn on what to think about the ennui I have toward Season 4 and I hope I snap out of it eventually but really does it matter at this point? The finale is next week and I won’t even be home to watch a winner be crowned. I’ll be doing my IFFBoston duties as we host one of our Summer Screening Series films so wow, there’s that!
The shortened season is both a blessing and a curse. The Olympics have forced the show to end earlier than it normally would and while that sucks in general, I’m also kind of excited for it to just be done with. What’s that all about?
Sure Cat Deeley has been better than ever and there’s been plenty of shirtless mancandy but I feel like the show’s still lacking that certain something. They let NappyTabs have too much exposure this season and if they were geniuses like Mia Michaels or Mandy Moore I’d be fine with it but for every 4 bad routines there’s a good one. I didn’t think losing Shane Sparks and Wade Robson would have that much impact but I think it did. Is it possible that’s what I’m longing for and that’s why there’s a disconnect? Bringing on Sonya Tayeh was a huge benefit and having Lil C guest judge gave us more of his genius but I need something more.
Am I alone in this? Am I the only one that thinks something is off this season?
Now that Jessica King is out of the competition due to some broken ribs, last week’s booted contestant Comfort Fedoke is back in the game. It looks like they are shaking things up a bit this week and one dance in general will make my partner Jon happy.
So You Think You Can Dance Season 4 Top 10 Couples, Routines and Choreographer Spoilers after the jump…(more…)
Last night the Top 12 performed on SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE and I don’t know if all the cleaning I did coupled with the heat had my head out of the game but I was not the impressed with the majority of the dances last night. Sure there were some standouts that I absoloved.
Hands down the best routine of the night was Katee and Joshua’s Bollywood routine, I mean let’s get real… it was banoodles! I loved Courtney and Gev’s Jazz number and how smokin’ hot was Will and Jessica’s Contemporary?
While I’m positive its time for Comfort Fedoke to gets ta steppin’, I can’t pick any of the guys to send home this week. Thayne is better than any partner he’s had all season so I don’t want to see him go home yet, I think the kid will kill it once he makes it into the Top 10. Gev is a fan fave so I don’t see his little scrawny ass going anywhere anytime soon which leaves us with Twitch, Will, Joshua and Mark. I don’t want to see any of them leave either. Frak, tonight is going to be ugly and for the first time all season I know I’m going to scream at my television.

Anyway, here are the videos from Week 5 as theTop 12 Perform

Read my So You Think You Can DanceAfterElton recaplet , then listen to our latest SYTYCD Podcast to get all of my thoughts on the Top 14 performing. Quickly, two dances for seven couples was waaaay too much this week. It killed the momentum of the show and it killed the personality I come to appreciate from seeing the rehearsal process… that being said, I didn’t love it any less.
There are a ton of videos to get to this week so let’s go…
We threatened to never do another TV Talk Podcast if you didn’t flock to iTunes and leave us comments… well I’m happy to report that you love us as much as we love you! Thanks to your generosity, we are back and this week’s podcast is a lot of fun!
We revise our thoughts on Swingtown now that we’re both completely caught up (and loving it), we talk about my chat with Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica) and her stint on Burn Notice plus some scoop on her new Fox pilot Inseparable.
Next we tackle one of the most talked about Fall pilots, J.J. Abrams FRINGE! Kath and I will review the plot, the mystery and the hotness that is Josh Jackson but don’t worry we don’t spoil anything for you! We’re good like that!
Then it’s time for some listener emails because you guys are cramazing!
Who wants to talk Comic-Con? No? Tough because we run down the shows that will be in San Diego and vent our frustrations over the scheduling. If you’re going to be in town for Comic-Con and you’re a reader or listener, let us know… we’d love to see you!
Before wrapping up this week we have a little fun with our TV version of F, Marry, Kill! That’s right, we each pick one we’d boink, one we’d marry and one we’d go Dexter Morgan on. join in the fun and leave us some comments about who you’d F, Marry and Kill based on our choices. We’ll read some of them on the air in our next podcast.
