Fall Schmall… The Winter 2010 TV schedule is cuckoo-bananas! Ducky and GMMR sat down, screeners in hand, mapped out all the premiere dates and dished the dirt on all the new and returning shows.
What did we think of the first 5 episodes of CHUCK Season 3? What about the new season of 24 featuring Starbuck (Katee Sackhoff)? What about new shows like LIFE UNEXPECTED, THE DEEP END, CAPRICA, HAPPY TOWN and HUMAN TARGET?
Want to know when DAMAGES, LOST, SOUTHLAND, GLEE and NURSE JACKIE return? Want to know how long you have to wait for Lauren Graham to shine in PARENTHOOD? How many more weeks until the return of TV Talk’s recurring listener fave “2 Idiots Talk LOST”?
It’s been 7 weeks since our last podcast and 7 weeks since we last saw each other. You totally thought GMMR and Ducky had called it quits didn’t you? How dare you…
An extended gig in the Hamptons originally sidelined the podcast, then a horrible back injury kept this terrible TV twosome apart until now!
For our first big podcast of the Fall, we thought we’d make up for lost time with a huge 2 hour 10 minute carcast full of laughs, tears, a near death experience and even some New England leaf peeping!
Shows covered in this podcast:
HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, BIG BANG THEORY, GOSSIP GIRL, HOUSE, SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE, THE BIGGEST LOSER, THE GOOD WIFE, V, GLEE, MODERN FAMILY, COUGAR TOWN, TOP CHEF, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, FLASH FORWARD, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, BONES, SUPERNATURAL, FRINGE, THE OFFICE, PARKS & RECREATION, 30 ROCK, COMMUNITY, GREY’S ANATOMY, PRIVATE PRACTICE, UGLY BETTY, DOLLHOUSE, SOUTHLAND, WHITE COLLAR, THE AMAZING RACE, SURVIVOR, DEXTER, MAD MEN and GREEK.
We hope you enjoy our ode to Fall TV so far this season and hope you’ll join in the conversation. Leave your thoughts on what we covered in the comments section of this post! We’d love to hear what you’ve got to say about the new Fall lineup.
Fall TV is finally starting to kick into gear and tonight, NBC premieres one of my television staples, THE BIGGEST LOSER.
I was late to the LOSER game and only started watching with Season 4 but that doesn’t mean I’m not completely obsessed and a die-hard fan. I laugh, I cry and I get really pissed with the contestants each season and tonight’s premiere was no different.
We see the 16 contestants that will battle it out on the ranch and before introductions are even made, they are forced into a challenge that sends two of the contestants to the hospital. Introductions are made and this season we’ve got ex-athletes, kids with junkie parents, people battling weight their entire lives, people wanting to lose weight for kids, a firefighter, and a woman that lost her entire family in a car accident.
Teams are picked, a big training twist makes me incredibly happy and I may or may not have had tears streaming down my face thanks to one Ms. Jilliian Michaels.
This season is all about “second chances” but really it’s a life or death situation for many of these contestants. If you thought last season brought the biggest guy and girl ever, just wait until you see some of the initial weigh ins tonight. You’ll be shocked (as Bob & Jill were) to see that we’ve barely scratched the surface.
Of the 4 season premieres I’ve watched for this show, this might be my favorite. It goes above and beyond the traditional introductions and niceties and gets down to business before the first commercial break.
Without spoiling anything, I will give you my two favorite lines from the premiere and tell me which trainer said which quote.
Quote 1:
“You know why you can’t quit? Because you weight over 470 pounds so get on that fucking treadmill!”
Quote 2:
“Everytime you lay down I’m gonna think ‘Dead Father’ – GET UP!”
Here’s a preview of tonight’s THE BIGGEST LOSER 8 Premiere:
THE BIGGEST LOSER 8 Premieres at 8pm tonight on NBC
The new Fall TV season is less than a week away and while I’ve been busy trying to watch all the new pilots I have to say that I’m not super excited about the new crop of shows. Bummer huh?
My podcasting partner in crime GMMR and I have been trying to schedule time to talk Fall TV and we hope to have all of the network podcasts up in the next week so hold tight. We’ve posted our thoughts on the new shows for The CW so please listen to that podcast to see what we love and/or hate.
In the meantime here are the shows I plan on watching this Fall. Shows in BLUE are what I plan on watching LIVE or DVR’d. Shows in PINK are ones that I will have to catch online or via iTunes.
MONDAY (click to enlarge) Monday’s have traditionally been a pretty busy night of TV viewing for me. However, this year it’s looking pretty open.
I’m annoyed that the power hour that started my night of television last year has been split up because BIG BANG THEORY and HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER was a partnership made in heaven. I’ll be interested to see what happens to BBT at such a late hour (and I hope to remember its on that late) and if I feel like the vibe is the same without it’s partner.
Another year, another chance to officially drop HEROES. Last year I decided to watch then within 5 episodes I dropped that lame duck for the 2nd time in 3 seasons. Going into Season 4, I’ve vowed to not even give it a single frame of consideration. Will. Not. Watch!
After a brief vacation from the kids on the Upper East Side, a summer marathon has renewed my love for all things GOSSIP GIRL. That doesn’t mean I won’t get annoyed with the repetitive storylines and the lame quick-wrap secondary storylines – it just means I’m excited for the show to return and kick some ass! Let’s not fuck it up Savage & Schwartz.
If you’re interested in ACCIDENTALLY ON PURPOSE starring Jenna Elfman, Ashley Jensen and Grant Show you should watch. It’s a very traditional sitcom and paired with TWO AND A HALF MEN, I think it’s going to be a huge hit. I just don’t see myself watching it week to week. The pilot is cute, Elfman is adorable and the premise is fun. Mark my words, this is one of the biggest new shows in 09.
TUESDAY (click to enlarge)
Believe it or not, I’m only watching two shows on Tuesday’s but hell if that isn’t four frakkin’ hours of television.
I’m a total sucker for the weight loss and emotional meltdowns of THE BIGGEST LOSER so there’s no chance I’m not watching Bob and Jillian bust some fatties once again. Love that damn show.
Obviously you know I’m a huge SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE junkie so that’s a no brainer – or is it? I’ve been very vocal about how I don’t love the idea of bringing SYTYCD to the Fall. I love having it as my summer obsession because I have less shows to watch in the summertime which means more time for a Paso Doble or two. Pushing it on us in the middle of the onslaught of new and returning shows seems cruel and I hate that it’s going to take up two hours of my Fall TV schedule. There… I’ve said it.
I’m not gonna lie – from time to time I will probably watch The CW’s reboot of MELROSE PLACE. I actually enjoyed the pilot episode. It’s 100% better than I expected it to be and surely my partner Jon will want to pop in and out of that salacious complex.
*If you’re wondering about BETTER OFF TED, don’t worry its coming back after DwtS ends (which isn’t soon enough)!
**ABC’s reboot of V starts November 3rd at 8pm (shitty time slot for a show that is not suited for 8pm) and I’m super excited. I loved the original as a kid and I really enjoyed the pilot for the remake. Plus, it’s got Elizabeth Mitchell, Alan Tudyk and Scott Wolf!
WEDNESDAY (click to enlarge)
Wednesday night is really the only night I’m giving new shows a chance at making it into my live/dvr rotation.
SYTYCD has it’s results show at 8pm and that’s followed by GLEE (which we all know I flippin’ heart). It’s a great one-two punch and I’m really looking forward to Wednesday’s – thanks FOX!
Over on ABC, my favorite new comedy, MODERN FAMILY gets paired up with the pretty good COUGAR TOWN. Trust me when I tell you to tune in to MODERN FAMILY. The pilot has laugh out loud funny jokes throughout and one of the best, THE BEST, things I’ve ever seen in the final few minutes. COUGAR TOWN is fun, a little dirty and honestly who doesn’t love having Courtney Cox, Busy Phillips and Josh Hopkins back on their screens?
EASTWICK is not as bad as you think it might be. The hour grew on me as it progressed and I’m willing to give it a couple weeks which is more than I can say for many of the new shows this Fall.
THE BIGGEST LOSER premieres September 15th on NBC but you don’t have to wait that long to see a sneak preview of the new season! This season is all about second chances in life and some of the stories seem gut-wrenching. Plus, find out which contestant from last season returns to hopefully lose more than he/she did last time around.
Bring it Bob and Jillian – it’s been a long summer and I can’t wait for you to kick some ass once again this fall!

This morning NBC announced the majority of their Fall 2009 TV Lineup and while we’re still waiting on the fate of CHUCK, there are a ton of returning and new shows to occupy our minds.
While I’m on pins and needles for CHUCK (fate will be determined on May 19th), I’m pretty psyched for the 3rd incarnation of PARENTHOOD (sans Keanu but with Peter Krause!!!) and DAY ONE not the mention THE SOUP’s Joel McHale in COMMUNITY!
Returning Shows: THE OFFICE, 30 ROCK, THE BIGGEST LOSER, CELEBRITY APPRENTICE, LAW & ORDER: SVU, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, HEROES, SOUTHLAND, PARKS AND RECREATION, SNL: THURSDAY UPDATE and JAY LENO’S 10pm crapfest.
Returning Shows Still on the Bubble: CHUCK, LAW & ORDER, MEDIUM, MY NAME IS EARL
New Comedies: 100 QUESTIONS
Emmy winner James Burrows (“Will & Grace,” “Friends”) directs “100 Questions,” a new comedy series written and executive-produced by Christopher Moynihan (“For Your Consideration”) that provides hilarious answers to 100 questions about love. Charlotte Payne (Sophie Winkleman, “Peep Show”) is looking for love and has rejected multiple marriage proposals — but she has yet to meet Mr. Right. When she joins a popular online dating site, she gets a little help from her dating counselor Ravi (Amir Talai, “The Ex List”) – who requires her to take a 100-question compatibility test. The questions aren’t easy for Charlotte to answer, and each one requires her to recount a poignant and humorous time in her life with friends Leslie (Elizabeth Ho, “Women’s Murder Club”), Jill (Joy Suprano, NBC’s “Law & Order”), Mike (Christopher Moynihan “For Your Consideration”) and Wayne (David Walton “Quarterlife”). The test becomes a journey of self-discovery for Charlotte who begins to realize what she truly wants in a relationship. Ron West (“Psych”), Kelly Kulchak (“Psych”) and Michelle Nader (“King of Queens”) join Moynihan as executive producers.
COMMUNITY
From Emmy Award-winning directors Joe and Anthony Russo (“Arrested Development”) comes “Community,” a smart comedy series about higher education — and lower expectations. The student body at Greendale Community College is made up of high-school losers, newly divorced housewives, and old people who want to keep their minds active. Within these not-so-hallowed halls, “Community” focuses on a band of misfits, at the center of which is a fast-talkin’ lawyer whose degree has been revoked (Joel McHale, “The Soup”), who form a study group and end up learning a lot more about themselves than they do about their course work. In addition to McHale, the series also stars: Gillian Jacobs (“The Book of Daniel”); Yvette Nicole Brown (“Rules of Engagement”); Danny Pudi (“Greek”); Alison Brie (“Mad Men”); and comedy legend Chevy Chase (“Saturday Night Live”). “Community” is a Krasnoff Foster Entertainment, Harmonious Claptrap and Russo Brothers production in association with Sony Pictures Television and Universal Media Studios. Russ Krasnoff (“The Soloist”), Dan Harmon (“The Sarah Silverman Program”), Joe Russo (“Arrested Development”), Anthony Russo (“Arrested Development”) and Gary Foster (“The Soloist”) serve as executive producers. Joe and Anthony Russo directed the pilot that was written by Dan Harmon.
New Dramas: DAY ONE
From executive producer/writer Jesse Alexander (“Heroes,” “Lost,” “Alias”) and director Alex Graves (“Fringe,” “Journeyman”), “Day One” tells the story of life on earth following a global catastrophe that has devastated the world’s infrastructures. Beginning with the immediate aftermath of the cataclysmic event, an eclectic band of survivors — played by Adam Campbell (“Date Movie”), Catherine Dent (“The Shield”), Julie Gonzalo (“Eli Stone”), David Lyons (“ER”), Derek Mio (“Greek”), Carly Pope (“24″), Thekla Reuten (“Sleeper Cell”) and Addison Timlin (“Cashmere Mafia”) — strives to rebuild society as they unravel the mysteries of what happened and face their uncertain future. The group, all residents of one apartment building in suburban Van Nuys, Calif., embarks on a quest for survival and discovers that hope is found in small victories — and heroes are born every day. “Day One” is a Universal Media Studios production.

Y’all know I have a huge weakness for the weight loss life transformer THE BIGGEST LOSER so my getting emotional over the show is no big shocker. Tonight’s show however was one huge shocker after another and I felt like I’d been beaten with a rubber hose and dragged through the Hudson on the belly of Sully’s plane.
When the teams did their shake up a couple weeks back, the majority of the players I’m most invested in were on Jillian’s Black Team so they were who I began rooting for. While I have nothing against Kristin, Mandi or Aubrey the fact is that they’re up against my two favorite players Tara and Mike so they’re expendable in the long run and I could no longer root for them. That was my mentality coming into tonight’s 2 hour bullshit fest that tested my patience and my sanity not to mention had me hoping the Black Team would lose.
This week the players were paired up against a contestant from the opposite team and the winner of each match up earned a point. When a team had 3 points, that team would win and be exempt, forcing the other team to send someone home. Easy enough, especially when Tara wins the ability to pair off the teams to the Black Team’s advantage. Slam dunk right? Not so much.
Immediately the Black Team starts getting cocky, certain that they have such a huge upper hand that there’s no chance they’re going to lose. While it didn’t bother me, I figured it was some not so subtle foreshadowing of bad things to come. Add on a 24 hour luxury where the Black Team gorged themselves on over 16,000 calories and ungodly amounts of alcohol and I knew immediately that they were going down big time.
When they got back at the ranch, Jillian loses her shit on the uncontrollable sloths and sends almost everyone into a shame spiral. Everyone except Filipe who does a Bobby Brady voice crackling impression before storming out like a little bitch to join Bob’s team for their last chance workout because he feels neglected and un-welcomed by Jillian. Sione being another blubbering Bob lover joins him… and Bob allows it! (more…)
Ducky’s back from vacation which means it’s time for another TV Talk Podcast! We have almost 3 weeks to cover so make yourself some tea, get a snack and settle in for the soothing cackles and rants we’re about to sling your way.
We start as we always do, Monday nights. BIG BANG THEORY and HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER continues to be the best damn double bill on television. CHUCK goes to the suburbs, tests his best friendship with Morgan and breaks up with Sarah, say what? HEROES hits rock bottom and Matt Dallas shows his rock hard… abs!
THE BIGGEST LOSER 7 pisses Ducky off and shockingly Kath watched! PRIVILEGED aired what may have been it’s series finale and is to be continued but when considering The CW renewed a bunch of shows already. AMERICAN IDOL continues to rock on while randomly REAPER returns.
TOP CHEF has a shocking finale while Kath gets a shocker as she realizes she missed DAMAGES last week mid-recap.
SURVIVOR’s getting ugly, Sweeps are in March, 30 ROCK gets political, AMERICA’S BEST DANCE CREW kills it and I might kill Kath for something she says about BURN NOTICE.
Over on Friday’s there’s FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, DOLLHOUSE and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA to discuss before breezing through Sunday’s THE AMAZING RACE because really you just want to listen to…
TWO IDIOTS TALK LOST!
NEWS: We have a permanent home for the podcast, a new site! Visit: TheTVTalkPodcast.com
THE BIGGEST LOSER is so fucking good this season that I wish everyday was Tuesday.
There’s a simple reason I love this season…. Bob’s amazing rant on that space cadet Joelle!
From the screaming to the blood, sweat and tears each week my affection for these one time fatties grows. There is something so inspiring and fascinating about watching these people change their lives in such dramatic ways that gets me.
What about last week’s un-surprising team shake up that surprisingly brought Bob to tears? Are you shitting me? After 7 seasons you’d think that the Trainers and the contestants would be ready for a switch and understand the need for a change up on the show but somehow every season they freak out. Bob’s actions however could have been detrimnental to his old and new team. His only job is to make sure his team loses weight in hopes of bettering themselves and no one needs to see him cry like a baby because his favorite players are gone. Way to welcome the newbies Bob, you dick.
This show is better than ever!
Somehow I genuinely care for almost every contestant this season and I want to see them succeed which is huge for me because last season I wanted half of these folks to have heart attacks before the season was over. Look, I’m growing as a person.
I’m Team Tara and Team Mike all the way and I cannot wait for tonight.
Chuck scored with a 3-D Superbowl episode, Gossip Girl sends Blair over the deep end, Heroes returns with some promise and the double punch of Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother once again make us laugh our asses off. Privileged said good bye to our boy Charlie, The Biggest Loser sent one pissed off contestant home and Fringe got prickly. Idol finally hits Hollywood week and America’s Best Dance Crew got all “It’s Britney Bitch” on us.
The Office got super-sized for the Super Bowl but did it score a home run, er… ABC falsely promotes a Grey’s/Private Practice crossover and Supernatural went back to the future. Battlestar Galactica got frakkin crazy while Friday Night Lights taught us how the other half lives. SNL scores a really hot but really random host and of course, Two Idiots Talk Lost!
As a bonus, it’s game time so get ready to play along at home.
Y’all know I’ve got a weakness for the heavy weights on THE BIGGEST LOSER and after last season’s semi-lackluster and unmotivated contestants I was psyched to see the newest cast begin their journey last night.
I know that last season was fun and sometimes evil, full of backstabbing and revenge which is everything I want in a reality show like THE AMAZING RACE or SURVIVOR but I hate it on a show like The Biggest Loser. Loser is more important, it’s more of a life changing show than a reality show and I hate when the contestants lose track and play the game more than change their lives (*cough* Vicki you hose-beast, I’m talking about you).
Last season it was about the game and it made me hate almost every tubby tubby what hangs over on the show – I don’t want to hate these people, I want to root for them and cry with them… that’s how I roll.
So I’m happy to report that within 15 minutes of the show starting last night I was already in tears. They promised the “biggest” season ever and they’ve delivered. This season not only plays host to the youngest and oldest contestants ever, it also has the biggest female contestant on the show and the largest contestant to ever step on that enormous scale.
It was the latter that brought me to tears for some reason. Daniel is a 19 year old that weighs close to 500 lbs. and just watching he and his pal David talk about their history and their hopes for the show I got all misty. Big people = big emotions on my part – I can’t help it!
So far I really like all the teams but that doesn’t mean some of these folks don’t need to go ASAP! I like a lot of halves, not whole teams… is that bad? I guess it’s not because after the big twist was revealed last night most of the people I didn’t like hit the road.
That’s right, The Biggest Loser laid a big whammy on the 11 teams last night. Two teams would be safe, every other team would have to send one of their members home for 30 days to lose the weight on their own. If at the end of the 30 days their teammate is still on the ranch, they’re back in the game. It’s crazy-fun as a twist and I can’t wait to see how this plays out.
If you did watch, were you just glued to your tube when 63 year old Jerry collapsed? That was some scary shit! He up and just passed out… I’d be mortified and would probably never show my face again but damn, that man came back and kicked some ass! You Go Jer!
Here are the people I’m digging so far this season:
Jerry (White Team)
Tara (Green Team)
Daniel (Orange Team)
Dane and his Major Appliance of a friend, Blaine (Black Team)
Carla, who went home last night (Silver Team)
Here are the folks I’m so not feeling:
Joelle aka Gets her ass handed to her by Trainer Bob next week (Silver Team)
Helen (Pink Team)
Laura (Green Team)
That’s not too bad of me for having watched just the premiere so far. Usually I have a much longer list of the contestants I hate… I’m prepared for a really emotional and amazing season! Damn I love this show.
I got really sick this past Sunday and have been trapped in my house ever since. I’ve been able to whittle my DVR down to almost nothing but can’t say that I feel like I’ve accomplished much as a human being.
There’s nothing worse than being stuck in your house and either not feeling like doing anything productive or physically being unable to accomplish the things you wish you could.
When it wasn’t coming out of both ends, my entire body was in pain for all of Sunday and most of Monday. Not aching, actual pain. My head, my neck, my back and my legs were killing me. I obviously diagnosed myself with meningitis but that never came to pass…
Sure I’ve watched a good amount of television but not enough to constitute a ton. Hell half of it was listened to instead of watched because I couldn’t turn my body in that direction for the first 2 days.
THE AMAZING RACE continues to be a strong season and come on, we got to meet Phil’s Dad… how sweet was that? Now if only we could find a way to plummet Terence and Sarah off a cliff. Those two are complete and total douchelips. And while they’re falling to their death, I hope that they somehow take those crotch-rockets Kelly and Christy with them.
BIG BANG THEORY was hilarious and continues to become one of my favorite comedies. Sheldon on Wolowitz’s scooter seriously almost made me wet myself. Surely I could pass incontinence off as part of my sickness.
HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER was pretty good but not great. Some moments were incredible though and I laughed a good bit. I’m sad that they made Stella so unlikeable before getting rid of her but I can’t say I’ll miss her at all.
GOSSIP GIRL finally saw the return of little gay Eric Van der Woodsen… with Spring Awakening boyfriend in tow. Sweet, they’re finally giving Eric some action. Now if only someone would give the boy some cutting shears and some hair dye… for reals! Evil Blair was back in action which is always a treat. While I thought evil Chuck was back, I’m happy to see yet another layer of that complex brat was revealed. How about Nate and Dan being on the verge of bangin’? That relationship is way gayer than Eric’s… I’m just sayin! xoxo
HEROES was enjoyable. Daphne is j’adorable and I’m glad that she isn’t gone after being killed in the future but to be honest I don’t know what in Samhain’s going on with the rest of the show. I’m sad Adam Monroe turned to dust so quickly, who doesn’t need a little Sark in their lives? Marionette Man was a great side story, that was one creepy ass dude. Will someone kill Mohinder already? I hate that dude. I’m glad they explained Hiro killing Ando and it wasn’t a real scenario where he would have to go back and stop himself… a fake sword and blood actually seemed perfect and logical in my death bed haze. Then there’s Mr. Petrelli who’s an asshole of a man, stealing his own son’s power. What’s that all aboot? Come on dude, spread the wealth… I know a ton of people have given up on the show but I’m really enjoying it this season. I don’t know if they know where they’re going with it but I feel like I’m willing to stick it out more than I was before.
MY OWN WORST ENEMY was fine but as much as I liked the pilot, this was just more of the same… no literally almost the exact same. Everyone worried about where the show would go after the first ep. and unless it goes somewhere drastically different in ep. 3 I don’t know that Christian and I will be gleaming the cube much longer.
I was able to catch THE BIGGEST LOSER: FAMILIES last night, enough of it to infuriate me! I know it’s all sorts of wrong to wish bad things on people who are changing their lives for the better but some of these ass-faces need to go!
That spiteful bitch Heba is first on my list. She orchestrated Phil’s exile to Jillian’s team last week after almost killing anyone that challenged her in the food competition now this week she rallies against his wife, her own teammate, for simply being married to the man. It was heinous. I know it’s wrong to wish her ill will but right now, I hope she gains 50 pounds. The woman sucks. Same goes for Brady’s worthless, rat faced homely wife Vicky. Is she shitting me with her attitude? How she was the biggest loser on the blue team this week is beyond me but just like Heba, I hope that bitch goes home next week. Go Coleen, Go Amy C. and just for the hell of it, Go Phil!
On Tuesday morning my TV started stroking out on me. It’s been working off and on for the last 20 hours but it’s not to be trusted. We still have warranty coverage for it but the service call isn’t until November 8th. So fingers crossed y’all.
TV Talk with GMMR and Ducky is finally back! We discuss the new fall schedule day by day and break down our returning faves and possible new must-sees.
From Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, Gossip Girl, Chuck to Heroes and My Own Worst Enemy on Monday. Tuesday’s are Biggest Loser, House, 90210, Privileged to Fringe and The Mentalist. Wednesday’s are all about Pushing Daisies, Bones, Private Practice, Dirty Sexy Money and Lipstick Jungle. Over on Thursday’s we’ve got Ugly Betty, Survivor, Kath & Kim, Grey’s Anatomy, The Office, 30 Rock, Supernatural, Life on Mars and Eleventh Hour. Friday night is all about The Ghost Whisperer (I kid) and The Ex-List and Life. Sunday’s we’re freaking out that The Amazing Race is back, Desperate Housewives, Cold Case, Dexter and Brothers & Sisters.
It’s a busy season folks, sit back and relax because we talk forever.
