If you barely survived our bookcasts, don’t worry, we’re back to TV Talk-ing. We met up for an impromptu, late-night carcast and we’re in rare form. That’s right, we’re talking TV with the danger of asphyxiation. You know that’s something you want to hear!
Highlights:
Kath went to the mall (or the airport) with Colby Smolders.
Kath drew the attention of a security guard and calls a girl a stretched midge.
Ducky’s loves Beaver… No, that can’t be right!

We survived another snow storm and another podcast! This week, the TV Talk Podcast gives you our thoughts on the winners and losers at this years GOLDEN GLOBES AWARDS.
DAMAGES Season 3 is hot on our heels and we briefly discuss the first two hours. Patty, Ellen and Tom are back for a killer season of manipluation and a sharp game of cat and mouse.
The most satisfying news from the winter TCA press tour revolves around the timeline for the next two seasons of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE.
PROJECT RUNWAY returns to New York City and the reunion feels so good! Heidi, Michael, Nina and Tim Gunn try to make it work with a new back of 16 designers. We’re already in love!
AMERICAN IDOL kicked off another season and Ducky may or may not be back on the bandwagon.
It wouldn’t be a TV podcast unless we talked about the Leno/Conan Late Night Debacle. What a shit-show…
Oh and did I mention we talk about AVATAR? Why not!
We end this week’s podcast with some fun and games! Get ready for a few rounds of “Would You Rather”: TV Edition.
The 67th Golden Globes Awards air tonight on NBC! I’m not a person that puts a lot of stock in awards shows but I do love me an awards show gathering. It’s chips and dip time y’all! Oh and the fact that Ricky Gervais is hosting makes this must watch television.
As I sit here this morning looking at the list of Golden Globes nominees, I’m realizing I don’t have much of an opinion when it comes to the film categories. Apparently I spend too much time watching films that grace the festival circuit and not the multiplex.
Does that mean I don’t have an opinion? Hardly, I always have an opinion!
Here’s how I’d like to see the Golden Globes shakedown when they air tonight (my picks are in bold). I’m not saying this is what I think will win, but in my heart what I wish would take home the golden sparkly thing. Let’s start with TV!
Best Television Series: Drama
“Mad Men”
“True Blood” “Dexter”
“Big Love”
“House” I really wanted to say TRUE BLOOD but some of that Maryann shit got cuckoo bananas and derailed the show at times. MAD MEN is always fucking crazy good but this season took some time to completely hook me. DEXTER on the other hand had possibly its best season to date. So gooooooooood!
Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series: Drama
Jon Hamm, “Mad Men”
Hugh Laurie, “House” Michael C. Hall, “Dexter”
Simon Baker, “The Mentalist”
Bill Paxton, “Big Love” No contest in my opinion… Michael C. Hall should win. He played the charming, dutiful husband and father with LEAVE IT TO BEAVER grace but he also played a manic, hell bent, jealous and at times loose canon Dex this season. Scary good.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series: Drama
Anna Paquin, “True Blood”
Kyra Sedgwick, “The Closer” Julianna Margulies, “The Good Wife”
Glenn Close, “Damages”
January Jones, “Mad Men” While I thought January Jones did a killer job this season, she’s no Glenn Close. But I didn’t pick Glenn Close because I’m ready for a newbie this year. I’m going with Julianna Margulies because her controlled yet crazy empowering portrayal of Alicia Florrick is mesmerizing to watch.
Best Television Series: Comedy
“30 Rock”
“The Office”
“Glee” “Modern Family”
“Entourage” Surely most of you thought I’d pick GLEE for this category. While I think it has a better chance at winning (I mean its hands down the most original series of the year), I’m still going with MODERN FAMILY! Family continues to be a smart, witty, laugh out loud dark family comedy that hits your heart from week to week. Best Series in any category… Period!
The rest of my Golden Globes TV and Film predictions are after the jump… (more…)
Another month, another sickness induced hiatus and not one but two surgeries later, GMMR and Ducky are back with a new TV Talk Podcast!
Your favorite carcasters are back to talk about all of the TV we’ve soaked in from our hospital and sick beds.
We kick off the podcast with the Season 6 finale of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE. Then we move on to the fall finales of GLEE and THE VAMPIRE DIARIES.
We sink our teeth into some TRUE BLOOD casting news then tackle the return of faves CHUCK and LOST.
MODERN FAMILY and THE OFFICE were Christmas fantastic, as were 30 ROCK and the increasingly brilliant PARKS & RECREATION.
HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER and THE BIG BANG THEORY are always worth a good conversation as is the debate over THE GOOD WIFE.
What else is on tap? How about MERCY, IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA, THE SING-OFF, SAY YES TO THE DRESS, HAPPILY EVER FASTER and LAUNCH MY LINE.
Did the right people win TOP CHEF and PROJECT RUNWAY? Who’s real pretty to look at and what’s our new TV Talk Podcast tagline?
Thanks for being so patient with our crazy illnesses and busy schedules. We wish we could podcast more regularly than we do and we think it’s amazing so many folks care about what we have to say regarding all things TV! You guys are the best.
It’s been 7 weeks since our last podcast and 7 weeks since we last saw each other. You totally thought GMMR and Ducky had called it quits didn’t you? How dare you…
An extended gig in the Hamptons originally sidelined the podcast, then a horrible back injury kept this terrible TV twosome apart until now!
For our first big podcast of the Fall, we thought we’d make up for lost time with a huge 2 hour 10 minute carcast full of laughs, tears, a near death experience and even some New England leaf peeping!
Shows covered in this podcast:
HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, BIG BANG THEORY, GOSSIP GIRL, HOUSE, SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE, THE BIGGEST LOSER, THE GOOD WIFE, V, GLEE, MODERN FAMILY, COUGAR TOWN, TOP CHEF, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, FLASH FORWARD, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, BONES, SUPERNATURAL, FRINGE, THE OFFICE, PARKS & RECREATION, 30 ROCK, COMMUNITY, GREY’S ANATOMY, PRIVATE PRACTICE, UGLY BETTY, DOLLHOUSE, SOUTHLAND, WHITE COLLAR, THE AMAZING RACE, SURVIVOR, DEXTER, MAD MEN and GREEK.
We hope you enjoy our ode to Fall TV so far this season and hope you’ll join in the conversation. Leave your thoughts on what we covered in the comments section of this post! We’d love to hear what you’ve got to say about the new Fall lineup.
Remember when Thursday night was a bat-shit crazy night of television. NBC owned the night and the counter programming was pretty fierce as well. Last season for some reason, I only watched a couple shows on Thursday’s and while I was happy to have some free time in my TV schedule, I kinda missed the chaos.
Tonight, the Fall Season starts to get really hectic! To make things even more chaotic for me, I’m in LA and can’t watch most of it because tonight I’ll be chillin’ with the final 3 crews of AMERICA’S BEST DANCE CREW!
Last week, The CW premiered THE VAMPIRE DIARIES to huge numbers. It was the biggest series premiere the network had ever seen and I’m happy to report I fucking love the show. Listen to our CW Fall Preview Podcast for more on why I’m totally addicted to TVD! SUPERNATURAL’s Season 5 premiere was crazy good and seriously, having the Winchesters back is like a little slice of heaven (or hell) right here on earth.
Tonight the premieres of SURVIVOR: SAMOA, BONES, PARKS & RECREATION, THE OFFICE, COMMUNITY and FRINGE little the landscape.
I was super excited for COMMUNITY but didn’t love it. It’s got a lot of promise but the pilot falls a little flat and reads quirky for quirks-sake. I’ve always been a huge fan of SURVIVOR so I’m psyched to see the newest castaways battle it out this season. THE OFFICE is always there for a good laugh and I can’t wait to see what expecting parents Jim & Pam do about telling the rest of Dunder Mifflin. I’ve had the BONES season premiere for a couple weeks but have been too busy to watch. Cannot wait! The FRINGE Season 2 premiere is one of the best hours of television I’ve watched so far this fall. Killer shit happens and I’m so glad that the Fringe Science Division is back in action (or is it?)!
What are you watching tonight and are you at all worried about having so many shows up against each other? I hate that the networks have pitted FRINGE against SUPERNATURAL. I love both shows and forcing genre fans to choose between the two is just bullshit. I’m obviously going to watch SUPERNATURAL live and watch FRINGE at a later date as the season plays out but damn… Just remember that GREY’S and PRIVATE PRACTICE are still to debut. Oy Vey!
The new Fall TV season is less than a week away and while I’ve been busy trying to watch all the new pilots I have to say that I’m not super excited about the new crop of shows. Bummer huh?
My podcasting partner in crime GMMR and I have been trying to schedule time to talk Fall TV and we hope to have all of the network podcasts up in the next week so hold tight. We’ve posted our thoughts on the new shows for The CW so please listen to that podcast to see what we love and/or hate.
In the meantime here are the shows I plan on watching this Fall. Shows in BLUE are what I plan on watching LIVE or DVR’d. Shows in PINK are ones that I will have to catch online or via iTunes.
MONDAY (click to enlarge) Monday’s have traditionally been a pretty busy night of TV viewing for me. However, this year it’s looking pretty open.
I’m annoyed that the power hour that started my night of television last year has been split up because BIG BANG THEORY and HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER was a partnership made in heaven. I’ll be interested to see what happens to BBT at such a late hour (and I hope to remember its on that late) and if I feel like the vibe is the same without it’s partner.
Another year, another chance to officially drop HEROES. Last year I decided to watch then within 5 episodes I dropped that lame duck for the 2nd time in 3 seasons. Going into Season 4, I’ve vowed to not even give it a single frame of consideration. Will. Not. Watch!
After a brief vacation from the kids on the Upper East Side, a summer marathon has renewed my love for all things GOSSIP GIRL. That doesn’t mean I won’t get annoyed with the repetitive storylines and the lame quick-wrap secondary storylines – it just means I’m excited for the show to return and kick some ass! Let’s not fuck it up Savage & Schwartz.
If you’re interested in ACCIDENTALLY ON PURPOSE starring Jenna Elfman, Ashley Jensen and Grant Show you should watch. It’s a very traditional sitcom and paired with TWO AND A HALF MEN, I think it’s going to be a huge hit. I just don’t see myself watching it week to week. The pilot is cute, Elfman is adorable and the premise is fun. Mark my words, this is one of the biggest new shows in 09.
TUESDAY (click to enlarge)
Believe it or not, I’m only watching two shows on Tuesday’s but hell if that isn’t four frakkin’ hours of television.
I’m a total sucker for the weight loss and emotional meltdowns of THE BIGGEST LOSER so there’s no chance I’m not watching Bob and Jillian bust some fatties once again. Love that damn show.
Obviously you know I’m a huge SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE junkie so that’s a no brainer – or is it? I’ve been very vocal about how I don’t love the idea of bringing SYTYCD to the Fall. I love having it as my summer obsession because I have less shows to watch in the summertime which means more time for a Paso Doble or two. Pushing it on us in the middle of the onslaught of new and returning shows seems cruel and I hate that it’s going to take up two hours of my Fall TV schedule. There… I’ve said it.
I’m not gonna lie – from time to time I will probably watch The CW’s reboot of MELROSE PLACE. I actually enjoyed the pilot episode. It’s 100% better than I expected it to be and surely my partner Jon will want to pop in and out of that salacious complex.
*If you’re wondering about BETTER OFF TED, don’t worry its coming back after DwtS ends (which isn’t soon enough)!
**ABC’s reboot of V starts November 3rd at 8pm (shitty time slot for a show that is not suited for 8pm) and I’m super excited. I loved the original as a kid and I really enjoyed the pilot for the remake. Plus, it’s got Elizabeth Mitchell, Alan Tudyk and Scott Wolf!
WEDNESDAY (click to enlarge)
Wednesday night is really the only night I’m giving new shows a chance at making it into my live/dvr rotation.
SYTYCD has it’s results show at 8pm and that’s followed by GLEE (which we all know I flippin’ heart). It’s a great one-two punch and I’m really looking forward to Wednesday’s – thanks FOX!
Over on ABC, my favorite new comedy, MODERN FAMILY gets paired up with the pretty good COUGAR TOWN. Trust me when I tell you to tune in to MODERN FAMILY. The pilot has laugh out loud funny jokes throughout and one of the best, THE BEST, things I’ve ever seen in the final few minutes. COUGAR TOWN is fun, a little dirty and honestly who doesn’t love having Courtney Cox, Busy Phillips and Josh Hopkins back on their screens?
EASTWICK is not as bad as you think it might be. The hour grew on me as it progressed and I’m willing to give it a couple weeks which is more than I can say for many of the new shows this Fall.
NBC has announced their Fall 2009, Midseason 2010 Schedule and there’s a couple new shows peppered amongst the network veterans. My buddy Scooter McGavin has once again come up with a great poll for TV Bloggers to participate in. This time we were tasked with coming up with our Favorite TV Duos (couples, partners, friends, enemies, etc.) from the current 2008/09 season.
After some major Snapple Abacus action, here is the list we came up with.
TV’s Top 25 Duos (2008/09 Season)
1. Coach Eric and Tammy Taylor (Friday Night Lights)
2. Liz Lemon and Jack Donagy (30 Rock)
3. Sheldon Cooper Ph.D. and Penny (The Big Bang Theory)
4. Jim Halpert and Dwight Shrute (The Office)
5. Patty Hewes and Ellen Parsons (Damages)
6. “Bones” and Special Agent Seeley Booth (Bones)
7. Emerson Cod and Olive Snook (Pushing Daisies)
8. Blair Waldolf and Chuck Bass (Gossip Girl)
9. Shawn Spencer and Burton “Gus” Guster (Psych)
10. Chuck Bartowski and Special Agent Sarah Walker (Chuck)
11. Sam and Dean Winchester (Supernat ural)
12. Marc St. James and Amanda Tannen (Ugly Betty)
13. Barney Stinson and Ted Mosbey (How I Met Your Mother)
14. Bill Adama and Laura Roslin (Battlestar Gallactica)
15. Landry Clark and Tyra Colette (Friday Night Lights)
16. Ben Linus and John Locke (Lost)
17. John “J.D.” Dorian M.D. and Dr. Christopher Turk (Scrubs)
18. Sookie Stackhouse and Bill Compton (True Blood)
19. Jeff Patel and Lester Barnes aka Jeffster (Chuck)
20. James “Sawyer” Ford and Juliet Burke (Lost)
21. Homer and Marge Simpson (The Simpsons)
22. Bill Adma and Saul Tigh (Battestar Galactica)
23. Richard Cypher and Kahlan Amnell (Legend of the Seeker)
24. Earl and Randy Hickey (My Name Is Earl)
25. Michael Westen and Fiona Glenanne (Burn Notice)
I’ve gotta say that I’m pretty surprised by some of these picks, especially some of the rankings. Homer and Marge? Really folks? Welcome to 1989! How do you choose Barney and Ted as a combo? Sure I love love love me some HIMYM and I wanted to include Barney and someone but really there’s no good pick. He’s awesome with everyone but no single character is better with him than others… that’s just my opinion. Sookie and Bill? Honestly? Legend of the Seeker? Why not pick Xina and her dykey friend Gabriella? Makes no sense to me.
For full disclosure, here’s my Top 10 list:
1. Bill Adama and Laura Roslin (Battlestar Galactica)
2. Coach Taylor and Tami Taylor (Friday Night Lights)
3. James “Sawyer” Ford and Juliet Burke (Lost)
4. Liz Lemon and Jack Donaghy (30 Rock)
5. Michael Westen and Fiona Glenanne (Burn Notice)
6. Booth and Bones (Bones)
7. Patty Hewes and Ellen Parsons (Damages)
8. Sheldon Cooper and Penny (The Big Bang Theory)
9. Emerson Cod and Olive Snook (Pushing Daisies)
10. Casey Cartwright and Frannie Morgan (Greek)
I know what you’re thinking… where the hell are Sam & Dean Winchester?! The truth is that they didn’t even cross my mind. Not once did my boys pop into my head and that makes me sad. I honestly would put them in the Top 5 but I spaced – sorry SPN boys and girls, I’m totally embarrassed. I’m also sad I didn’t include The Doctor and Donna (DOCTOR WHO), Capt. Jack and Ianto (TORCHWOOD) or even Trainer’s Bob and Jillian (THE BIGGEST LOSER). Given a Top 25 I would have included more choices and if I thought about my Top 10 a little better, it would be somewhat different but what can ya do?
How about you guys? Which TV Duos would make your list for the 2008/09 TV Season?
This morning NBC announced the majority of their Fall 2009 TV Lineup and while we’re still waiting on the fate of CHUCK, there are a ton of returning and new shows to occupy our minds.
While I’m on pins and needles for CHUCK (fate will be determined on May 19th), I’m pretty psyched for the 3rd incarnation of PARENTHOOD (sans Keanu but with Peter Krause!!!) and DAY ONE not the mention THE SOUP’s Joel McHale in COMMUNITY!
Returning Shows: THE OFFICE, 30 ROCK, THE BIGGEST LOSER, CELEBRITY APPRENTICE, LAW & ORDER: SVU, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, HEROES, SOUTHLAND, PARKS AND RECREATION, SNL: THURSDAY UPDATE and JAY LENO’S 10pm crapfest.
Returning Shows Still on the Bubble: CHUCK, LAW & ORDER, MEDIUM, MY NAME IS EARL
New Comedies: 100 QUESTIONS
Emmy winner James Burrows (“Will & Grace,” “Friends”) directs “100 Questions,” a new comedy series written and executive-produced by Christopher Moynihan (“For Your Consideration”) that provides hilarious answers to 100 questions about love. Charlotte Payne (Sophie Winkleman, “Peep Show”) is looking for love and has rejected multiple marriage proposals — but she has yet to meet Mr. Right. When she joins a popular online dating site, she gets a little help from her dating counselor Ravi (Amir Talai, “The Ex List”) – who requires her to take a 100-question compatibility test. The questions aren’t easy for Charlotte to answer, and each one requires her to recount a poignant and humorous time in her life with friends Leslie (Elizabeth Ho, “Women’s Murder Club”), Jill (Joy Suprano, NBC’s “Law & Order”), Mike (Christopher Moynihan “For Your Consideration”) and Wayne (David Walton “Quarterlife”). The test becomes a journey of self-discovery for Charlotte who begins to realize what she truly wants in a relationship. Ron West (“Psych”), Kelly Kulchak (“Psych”) and Michelle Nader (“King of Queens”) join Moynihan as executive producers.
COMMUNITY
From Emmy Award-winning directors Joe and Anthony Russo (“Arrested Development”) comes “Community,” a smart comedy series about higher education — and lower expectations. The student body at Greendale Community College is made up of high-school losers, newly divorced housewives, and old people who want to keep their minds active. Within these not-so-hallowed halls, “Community” focuses on a band of misfits, at the center of which is a fast-talkin’ lawyer whose degree has been revoked (Joel McHale, “The Soup”), who form a study group and end up learning a lot more about themselves than they do about their course work. In addition to McHale, the series also stars: Gillian Jacobs (“The Book of Daniel”); Yvette Nicole Brown (“Rules of Engagement”); Danny Pudi (“Greek”); Alison Brie (“Mad Men”); and comedy legend Chevy Chase (“Saturday Night Live”). “Community” is a Krasnoff Foster Entertainment, Harmonious Claptrap and Russo Brothers production in association with Sony Pictures Television and Universal Media Studios. Russ Krasnoff (“The Soloist”), Dan Harmon (“The Sarah Silverman Program”), Joe Russo (“Arrested Development”), Anthony Russo (“Arrested Development”) and Gary Foster (“The Soloist”) serve as executive producers. Joe and Anthony Russo directed the pilot that was written by Dan Harmon.
New Dramas: DAY ONE
From executive producer/writer Jesse Alexander (“Heroes,” “Lost,” “Alias”) and director Alex Graves (“Fringe,” “Journeyman”), “Day One” tells the story of life on earth following a global catastrophe that has devastated the world’s infrastructures. Beginning with the immediate aftermath of the cataclysmic event, an eclectic band of survivors — played by Adam Campbell (“Date Movie”), Catherine Dent (“The Shield”), Julie Gonzalo (“Eli Stone”), David Lyons (“ER”), Derek Mio (“Greek”), Carly Pope (“24″), Thekla Reuten (“Sleeper Cell”) and Addison Timlin (“Cashmere Mafia”) — strives to rebuild society as they unravel the mysteries of what happened and face their uncertain future. The group, all residents of one apartment building in suburban Van Nuys, Calif., embarks on a quest for survival and discovers that hope is found in small victories — and heroes are born every day. “Day One” is a Universal Media Studios production.

Ducky’s back from vacation which means it’s time for another TV Talk Podcast! We have almost 3 weeks to cover so make yourself some tea, get a snack and settle in for the soothing cackles and rants we’re about to sling your way.
We start as we always do, Monday nights. BIG BANG THEORY and HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER continues to be the best damn double bill on television. CHUCK goes to the suburbs, tests his best friendship with Morgan and breaks up with Sarah, say what? HEROES hits rock bottom and Matt Dallas shows his rock hard… abs!
THE BIGGEST LOSER 7 pisses Ducky off and shockingly Kath watched! PRIVILEGED aired what may have been it’s series finale and is to be continued but when considering The CW renewed a bunch of shows already. AMERICAN IDOL continues to rock on while randomly REAPER returns.
TOP CHEF has a shocking finale while Kath gets a shocker as she realizes she missed DAMAGES last week mid-recap.
SURVIVOR’s getting ugly, Sweeps are in March, 30 ROCK gets political, AMERICA’S BEST DANCE CREW kills it and I might kill Kath for something she says about BURN NOTICE.
Over on Friday’s there’s FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, DOLLHOUSE and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA to discuss before breezing through Sunday’s THE AMAZING RACE because really you just want to listen to…
TWO IDIOTS TALK LOST!
NEWS: We have a permanent home for the podcast, a new site! Visit: TheTVTalkPodcast.com
Chuck scored with a 3-D Superbowl episode, Gossip Girl sends Blair over the deep end, Heroes returns with some promise and the double punch of Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother once again make us laugh our asses off. Privileged said good bye to our boy Charlie, The Biggest Loser sent one pissed off contestant home and Fringe got prickly. Idol finally hits Hollywood week and America’s Best Dance Crew got all “It’s Britney Bitch” on us.
The Office got super-sized for the Super Bowl but did it score a home run, er… ABC falsely promotes a Grey’s/Private Practice crossover and Supernatural went back to the future. Battlestar Galactica got frakkin crazy while Friday Night Lights taught us how the other half lives. SNL scores a really hot but really random host and of course, Two Idiots Talk Lost!
As a bonus, it’s game time so get ready to play along at home.
The TV Talk Podcast with GMMR and Ducky finally tackles more of your listener and reader questions!
First up we tackle the mid-season shows we’re looking forward to (including returning faves): Dollhouse, Cupid, Castle, Leverage, Truth in Advertising, Lost, 24, Battlestar Galactica, Damages, Nip/Tuck.
Don’t forget that some of our favorite summer shows finish off their runs as well… we’re talking The Closer, Burn Notice and My Boys to name a few.
Want to know the fate of Scrubs and The CW’s Reaper and if/when they’ll return? We’ve got the scoop.
What about the DirecTV/NBC split of the amazing Friday Night Lights – are we watching and if so what do we think? First of all, don’t question our loyalty to the Dillon Panthers; Second, just listen.
How did our favorite shows hold up during November sweeps? We’ll cover everything from Heroes to Chuck, Supernatural to The Office so get ready for our picks of the best and worst of fall sweeps, stunts and special guests.
This week Pushing Daisies was canceled – Kath and I give our thoughts. RIP!
So what else could we possibly talk about? Is scaredy-cat Kath watching HBO’s True Blood? What’s the deal with the Arrested Development movie? Why is Tricia Helfer the go-to-gal for guest starring roles and oh sweet lord, why does Britney’s have another reality show?
Last but not least we have another game for you all to play along with at home! This episode we’re breaking hearts and creating our most interesting ’ship!
Oh and you’ll never believe this but in a TV Talk first, we talk about One Tree Hill… WTF?
